The mega-comet Bernardinelli-Bernstein will get as close as Saturn in 2031

A mega-comet - potentially the largest ever discovered - is heading from the Oort Cloud towards our direction. Estimated to be 100-200 kilometers across, the unusual celestial wanderer will make its closest approach to the Sun in 2031. However, the closest it will come to Earth is to the orbit of Saturn.

Astronomers say Comet Bernardinelli-Bernstein (C/2014 UN271) could be the largest member of the Oort Cloud ever detected, and it is the first comet on an incoming path to be detected so far away.

The graphic above, by astronomer Will Gater compares the size of the comet to other Solar System objects.

The comet was discovered Pedro Bernardinelli and Gary Bernstein, from the University of Pennsylvania earlier this year. They were scouring through data from the 570-megapixel Dark Energy Camera (DECam) on the Víctor M. Blanco 4-meter Telescope in Chile. They found data of this object that was originally collected from 2014-2018, which did not show a typical comet tail, and the object was therefore thought to be a dwarf planet.

But within a day of the announcement of its discovery via the Minor Planet Center, astronomers using the Las Cumbres Observatory network took new images which revealed that it has grown a coma in the past 3 years, and that it was rapidly moving rapidly through the Oort Cloud. The object was then officially classified as a comet.

Meteor fireball over Spain on October 13

fireball
This fireball was spotted over Spain on 13 October 2021, at 22:29 local time (equivalent to 20:29 universal time). The bolide was generated by a rock from asteroid 2010UB that hit the atmosphere at about 47,000 km/h. The fireball began at an altitude of about 81 km over the west of the province of Valencia (Valencian Community, Spain), and ended at a height of around 32 km over the province of Cuenca (region of Castilla-La Mancha).

This meteor was recorded in the framework of the SMART project, operated by the Southwestern Europe Meteor Network (SWEMN) from the meteor-observing stations located at La Hita (Toledo), Sierra Nevada, La Sagra (Granada), Calar Alto (Almería), and Madrid (Dr. Jaime Izquierdo, Universidad Complutense de Madrid). The event has been analyzed by the principal investigator of the SMART project: Dr. Jose M. Madiedo, from the Institute of Astrophysics of Andalusia (IAA-CSIC).

Best of the Web: British Columbia woman awakes to a hole in her roof and a space rock on her pillow

On Oct. 4, many were treated to the sight of a fireball lighting up the night sky, with images of a meteor sailing above Lake Louise striking awe.

Longtime Golden resident Ruth Hamilton, however, was fast asleep.

Or at least she was until she was roughly awoken by the sound of a crash through her ceiling and the sensation of debris on her face.

"I just jumped up and turned on the light, I couldn't figure out what the heck had happened," said Hamilton.

She said she took a look around to get her bearings, and spotting a rock sitting neatly on her pillow next to
where her head usually lays.

Meteor fireball crosses the sky over Alsace, France

fireball
A "luminous ball" crossed the sky on Thursday evening over Alsace.

What is this thing ? Many witnesses were very astonished to see shortly after 8 p.m. a luminous mass moving at high speed in the sky.

For the professionals of the thing it is about a bolide, a meteorite which by penetrating the atmosphere, causes a strong luminous effect at very high speed.

Meteor fireball over central Spain (Oct. 4)

fireball
This fireball was recorded over Spain on 2021 October 4, at 23:12local time. It was produced by a fragment (a meteoroid) from an asteroid that hit the atmosphere at about 86,000 km / h. The fireball began at a height of about 88 km over the east of the province of Ávila and ended at an altitude of around 45 km above the ground level over the center of the same province.

The event was recorded in the framework of the SMART project, operated by the Southwestern Europe Meteor Network (SWEMN), from the meteor-observing stations located at La Hita (Toledo), La Sagra (Granada), Galapagar (Madrid), Huelva, Sierra Nevada, and Seville. The event has been analyzed by the principal investigator of the SMART project: Dr. Jose M. Madiedo, from the Institute of Astrophysics of Andalusia (IAA-CSIC).

Meteor fireball over Granada, Spain (3 October)

fireball
On 3 October 2021, at 21:41h local time, this stunning fireball was observed by a wide number of eyewitnesses over the south of Spain. This bolide was generated by a rock (a meteoroid) from Comet D / 1978 R1 (Haneda-Campos) that hit the atmosphere at about 54,000 km / h. The fireball overflew the province of Granada (Andalusia).

It began over the east of that province at an altitude of about 81 km, moved northwest, and ended at a height of around 34 km over the north of the same province. This bright meteor was recorded in the framework of the SMART project, operated by the Southwestern Europe Meteor Network (SWEMN), from different meteor-observing stations located in Spain.

The event has been analyzed by the principal investigator of the SMART project: Dr. Jose M. Madiedo, from the Institute of Astrophysics of Andalusia (IAA-CSIC).21:41(local peninsular time) on October 3, this impressive ball of fire could be seen by crowds of people crossing the skies of the south and the center of the country.

New Comet P/2021 Q5 (ATLAS)

CBET 5029 & MPEC 2021-R98 , issued on 2021, September 06, announce the discovery of a new comet (magnitude ~17) on CCD images taken on August 29.6 UT with a 0.5-m f/2 Schmidt reflector at Haleakala, Hawaii, in the course of the "Asteroid Terrestrial-Impact Last Alert System" (ATLAS) search program. The new comet has been designated P/2021 Q5 (ATLAS).

Stacking of 58 unfiltered exposures, 30 seconds each, obtained remotely on 2021, September 03.1 from G18 (ALMO Observatory, Italy) through a 0.30-m f/4 reflector + CCD, shows that this object is a comet with a compact coma about 8" arcsec in diameter and a tail 10" long in PA 270 (Observers A. Valvasori & E. Guido).

Meteor fireball crosses cities in Minas Gerais and lights up Copacabana's sky in Brazil

FIREBALL
Sky watchers could see the luminous route of a celestial body that entered the Earth's atmosphere last night (29) and crossed four Brazilian cities. As recorded by the climate observation cameras of the Clima ao Vivo platform, a bolide - an object of unknown origin on a high-speed route - lit the skies of Itamonte, Varginha and Patos de Minas, in Minas Gerais, and could also be seen from Rio de January.
