Giant sinkhole appears in Turkey
Residents of Konya Province in southern Turkey have spoken of their terror when a giant sinkhole suddenly appeared in a local field.

"We are very afraid (for) our lives. It is luck that no one fell into it," said one local farmer.

Measuring 10 metres wide and 90 metres deep, the crater is thought to have formed in the space of 24 hours.

No one was injured as a result of the ground caving in.

A large sinkhole has opened up in Burnaby near the 4800 block of Albert Street on Monday evening.

Metro Vancouver crews estimate the sinkhole is 16 feet long, six feet wide and three to four feet deep.

An investigation is underway into what caused the road to collapse, says Metro Vancouver spokesman Don Bradley.

"There has been a considerable amount of infrastructure, work performed in the area over the past several years but the investigation will determine the cause and appropriate next steps," he said.

Albert Street is closed for one block between Gamma and Delta Avenues. A security crew will watch over the sinkhole overnight and cleanup crews will be back Tuesday morning.

The dramatic scene unfolding in front of the Brookshire's supermarket in Granbury on Sunday is evidence of the power of water.

A large chunk of the parking lot along Morgan Street was washed away by flooding, leaving a deep, gaping hole in the pavement estimated at 40 feet across.

By Sunday afternoon, the Granbury City Council convened an emergency meeting at the site of the sinkhole/landslide to discuss the damage here and elsewhere.

Council member Rose Myers showed up with pizza for workers who had been at the scene through the night.

A sinkhole that developed Tuesday evening forced the Allentown Streets Department to close the 200 block of North 30th Street, city police said.

The sinkhole was discovered when a pedestrian noticed a narrow, 3-foot-long crack in the pavement, about 3 to 4 feet deep. Police said that, just below the pavement, the sinkhole affected an area as wide as 15 feet.

Police Capt. Bill Reinik said the middle of the block was barricaded shut, but residents still can reach their homes. He said the sinkhole probably can be repaired with relatively little bother.

A sinkhole developed in the 2400 block of Lehigh Parkway South, near the entrance of Mack Truck Customer Center late Sunday, according to Allentown police.

The 15-foot-wide hole has been stabilized but traffic is being diverted because of the presence of gas mains under the road in the area, police said.

The hole is also about 50 yards from the main entrance to the Mack Trucks facility. Mack workers are being diverted to the Oxford Drive entrance of the Allentown Recycling Center and then to the rear entrance of the Mack facility, police said

The current sinkhole isn't the first one in Allentown. Another opened 6 months ago, as you can see in the video above. In 2013 a large sinkhole threatened a family home in Bethlehem Township (video below).

Severe rain causes sinkhole in west Sydney; threatens apartment blocks

Dozens of residents have spent the night away from their homes after fears of a building collapse in Sydney's west.

About 60 people were evacuated from three apartment blocks in Harris Park on Saturday evening after heavy rain damaged a nearby construction site at Parkes Street.

NSW SES media spokesman Todd Burns said the walls of a construction pit had started to crumble after being softened by rain.

Amid concerns the apartment buildings either side might give way, residents spent the night with family and friends and had not been allowed to return on Sunday morning.

Police said initial inquiries indicated that severe weather conditions had caused "excessive soil erosion and affected the structural integrity of the site".

It is not known when the buildings will be deemed safe as investigations involving the site developer, engineers, geologists and gas and electrical companies continue.

The job was one of more than 1000 the SES had responded to since 7pm on Thursday as wild weather hit Queensland and New South Wales, fatally sweeping three cars off the road north of Brisbane and killing a six-year-old boy at South Ballina.

A water main break in Breda flooded streets and left area residents without water Sunday, utility firm Brabant Water announced. The break caused a sinkhole on Haagweg, leading the company to send repair crews to the scene.

A traffic detour was set up around Haagweg, to give water crews room to work.

The incident began at about 5 a.m. The area around Haagweg and Gooren, a street 150 meters east of there, is without water until about 8 p.m., the company said less than two hours later.

Swallowed up: This huge sinkhole measuring around 100m wide by 60m deep has appeared in the village of Solotvino in the Zakarpatska Oblast region of western Ukraine
Spanning 100 metres across and some 60 metres deep, this gigantic hole could be a meteor crater.

But it's understood to have been caused by something far closer to home - humble salt.

Terrified residents fear their homes will soon vanish after it suddenly opened up in their Ukrainian village, reportedly swallowing seven houses in the process.

Now they are demanding the government act to either stop the hole getting even bigger or move them to a new, safer location.
