German floods death toll hits 180, with 150 still missing

The latest death toll from floods that hit western Germany this month stands at 180, with about 150 still missing, authorities said on Friday. With more rain forecast this weekend, German meteorological services called for vigilance.

In the Rhineland-Palatinate region, which was the worst hit by the storms, 132 are now confirmed dead and 766 injured, according to police.

While there are still 149 people missing in the region, "we do not assume that the final number of deaths will increase by that much", said Roger Lewentz, the state interior minister, adding that the list included people on holiday.

Disaster authorities in Panama reported severe damaged after floods and heavy rain in Bocas del Toro province.

The country's National Civil Protection System (SINAPROC) said flooding had affected 27,175 people across 27 sectors in the province . Five landslides were also reported.

Flooding struck after heavy rain from 22 July. Several rivers including the Sixaola River and its tributaries broke their banks. Over 20 people had to be rescued from flood water.

Russia's Sochi region hit by floods for second time in a month

Emergency sirens sounded in the southern Russian region of Sochi overnight after rivers burst their banks in heavy rain for a second time this month and flooding closed a motorway.

The sirens, heard in areas near the city of Sochi, which hosted the 2014 Winter Olympics, were a warning for residents but evacuation was not planned at this time, the emergencies ministry was cited by the TASS news agency as saying.

Earlier this month, heavy rains caused severe flooding in the same area, with roads turning into rivers for several days.


On Friday, floods also hit an area of Russia's Far East, damaging a bridge on the Trans-Siberian railway line partially suspending rail traffic on a transportation artery that is crucial for Russia's economy.

While northern areas of Russia's Far East Region are fighting wildfires, territories further south have seen ongoing floods which have forced almost 4,000 people to evacuate their homes.

In a statement of 24 July 2021, Deputy Minister of Emergency Situations (EMERCOM) of the Russian Federation Viktor Yatsutsenko said flooding had affected 99 settlements across Zabaykalsky Krai (Territory), Khabarovsk Krai and Amur Oblast (Region). As many as 2,355 residential buildings, more than 5,000 household plots, 76 low-water bridges and 408 road sections have been damaged. Furthermore, preventive purposes, almost 4,000 people were evacuated.

Most recently, flooding has affected areas in Zabaykalsky Krai, where Shilkinsky district was the hardest hit. The region's EMERCOM office said 2,500 people were affected by floods in the city of Shilka, Shilkinsky district after a sharp rise in the level of the Kiya River following heavy rain from 21 to 22 July. Hundreds of homes and plots have been flooded.

Thunderstorms broke out in the provinces of Namur and Walloon Brabant this Saturday evening, which again causes flooding. The regions of Dinant, Daussoulx, Wépion, Jambes, Yvoir, Neufchâteau, Andenne, Walhain, Louvain-la-Neuve, Saint-Nicolas are particularly affected.

Heavy rains caused significant damage in Dinant, route de Philippeville and in the station area , says Alderman Robert Closset. "There are 50 cm of water and 5 cars obstructing the level crossing," he continues. Other cars were also washed away. "There are 25 cars that were washed away and the tarmac of the Route de Philippeville comes off and hits the railroad tracks. The Athus-Meuse line must be affected. " I have lived in Dinant for 57 years as riparian of the Meuse, I have never seen that " , adds the former mayor of Dinant and current provincial deputy Richard Fournaux.

At least 14 fatalities after flash floods in 5 governorates of Yemen

Storms and heavy rain have caused flooding in several parts of Yemen over the last few days.

Figures from the Yemen Meteorological Service show heavy rainfall affected the country from 16 July, 2021.

The Governorates of al-Mahrah, Hadramawt, Shabwa, Abyan and Al Jawf were all affected by floods. Local media, quoting officials, said at least 14 people had lost their lives as a result. As well as causing loss of life, flooding has destroyed crops, roads and communications infrastructure.

Bridge collapse halts legendary Trans-Siberian Railway in both directions after heavy flooding in Russia's far east

Heavy rains in Russia’s Zabaykalsky Region led to a collapse of a railway bridge located in the section between Kuenga-Ukurey of the Trans-Siberian Railway Network, the regional office of the Russian Emergencies Ministry reported.
The world-famous Trans-Siberian railway has been forced to temporarily cease operations after a torrential downpour caused a bridge to completely collapse under the heavy weight of flooding in the far east of the country.

The local Ministry of Emergency Situations reported that the bridge, located in the country's Far East, fell down after heavy rain early on Friday morning. Luckily, there were no casualties.

China floods: Zhengzhou downgrades emergency response, but heavy rain continues to fall in other parts of Henan

While the provincial capital continued cleaning up, other major cities in the province were facing further heavy downpours.
Rescue services were working to get supplies to outlying villages and distribute supplies after the authorities said 3 million people had been affected.

The central Chinese city of Zhengzhou downgraded its emergency response level on Thursday as it continued to clean up after this week's devastating floods, but other parts of Henan province were braced for further heavy rain.

The storms have killed at least 33 people across the province and more than 3 million have been affected, the local authorities said. A total of eight people have been reported missing, according to state news agency Xinhua.

Zhengzhou, the provincial capital, was hit by several days of heavy rain, causing floods of an intensity not seen in decades.

Three thousand military personnel were working in 10 different danger zones around the city, Xinhua reported. On Wednesday it published footage showing the soldiers laying sandbags over a breach in a dam on the Jialu river.

Donation points were set up around the city to distribute essential supplies after residents panic-bought supplies during the first days of the flood.

Severe flooding struck in parts of Colorado and New Mexico, USA, over the last few days. Officials report at least 3 people have died and 3 more are missing as a result.

Flooding and mudslides struck in northern Colorado after heavy rain fell on burn scar areas on 20 July 2021. Evacuation notices were issued for areas near the town of Rustic, Larimer County.

A mudslide sent a large amount of debris into the Poudre Canyon in Larimer County. Three people were swept away in the mudslide. Larimer County Sheriff's Office said the body of one of the victims was found but 2 people are still missing. At least five houses were destroyed and roads were damaged in the flooding. As search operations continue, emergency crews will be searching on foot and with drones, Larimer County Sheriff's Office said.
