Vanuatu has launched a Dunkirk-style evacuation on the northern island of Ambae as a flotilla of boats rescues islanders from an erupting volcano that has polluted many of the island's sources of drinking water.

Crowds of islanders from at least three evacuation points on the island have begun boarding ferries, canoes and commercial vessels for the safety of surrounding islands Maewo, Pentecost and Santo.

Reuters reporter Ben Bohane, on location in Ambae, said he saw people camping on a hillside at the town of Lolowai waiting calmly for ships to ferry them to safety.

"There were big sacks of rice and boxes of tinned fish," he said.

The eruption has polluted many of the island's water sources leaving thousands of people in need of safe drinking water, Red Cross delegate Joe Cropp told Reuters by phone on Sunday.

"Water is crucial," he said. "It's important to get on top of it right away."

The Manaro Voui volcano, the nation's largest, was seen hurling steam and rocks into the air by New Zealand vulcanologist Brad Scott who flew over the volcano on Saturday.

Comment: Meanwhile Bali volcano evacuees from outside the 'danger zone' have been told to return home. Bali Governor I Made Mangku Pastika said it had only been necessary for about 70,000 people from 28 villages to have evacuated - about half the total number of 141,399 evacuees.

Mount Agung, a volcano in eastern Bali, has been on the highest possible alert since September 22, after intensifying seismic activity pushed molten rock known as magma towards the surface.

The Environmental Management Authority (EMA) says it received a report last Wedneday of water and mud bubbling from a hole in the ground in the vicinity of LP 22 Macaya Trace, Munroe Road, Cunupia.

An initial assessment conducted by the EMA on the same evening revealed that in addition to water and mud bubbling from the ground, heat/ steam and unknown pungent gas were being emitted. Further, there was no pipeline or associated infrastructure in the vicinity of the site.

The EMA in keeping with its coordinating role notified several agencies to assist with the further assessment of this phenomenon namely, ODPM, MEEA, UWI Seismic Research Unit, NGC, Geological Society of Trinidad and Tobago and the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG) Young Professionals Trinidad and Tobago Chapter.

Volcanic eruptions to cool Earth, record Arctic sea ice growth occurring

Mount Sinabung unexpectedly erupted, sparking fears over an imminent Mount Agung eruption in Bali
Mount Sinabung unexpectedly erupted, sparking fears over an imminent Mount Agung eruption in Bali

Vanuatu evacuates an island due to volcanic eruption, Bali evacuates villages due to volcanic eruption, Sinabung erupts, but what they dont tell you is that every Grand Solar Minimum there are massive eruptions that destroy global crop production. Now with record Arctic sea ice growth in 2017, the most ever recorded in September, the global warming crowd is just hoping for an eruption so they can blame Earths cooling temperatures on the volcano, not the Sun, which is the true driver of our climate.

Mexico's Popocatépetl volcano erupts same day as deadly quake

As if the deadly earthquake in Mexico weren't enough, a volcano erupted amid the violent tremors.

Popocatepetl - about 45 miles southeast of quake-ravaged Mexico City and some 30 miles from the temblor's epicenter - belched ash and gas as the 7.1-magnitude earthquake rocked the country's central region.

The county's volcano-monitoring system registered one explosion and 256 "low-intensity exhalations" between Tuesday and Wednesday mornings but said none of the activity can be attributed to the earthquake, according to Mexico's National Center for Prevention of Disasters.

A church in Atzitzihuacan at the foot of the mountain collapsed during the quake and eruption, killing 15 worshippers as they celebrated Mass inside.

Pope Francis said he was praying for victims in the majority-Catholic country.

"In this moment of pain, I want to express my closeness and prayers to all the beloved Mexican people," he said.

The 17,700-foot Popocatepetl has been particularly active this summer and also blew its top amid the Aug. 21 solar eclipse.

Comment: Meanwhile Bali's Mount Agung threatens to erupt for the first time in 50 years. Mount Agung is one of many similar volcanoes in Indonesia and the Ring of Fire surrounding the Pacific and eastern Indian oceans.

Cooling effect expected when Indonesia's Mount Agung erupts

Something very interesting will happen when Bali's Mount Agung finally erupts: the Earth will become a little bit cooler.

Yep. It's not exactly what you'd expect after a volcanic eruption, which will see molten lava spewed into the air.

But don't get too excited, it will far from reverse the effects of global warming.

Here's why:

Global temperatures dropped last time Agung erupted

Mount Agung last erupted in 1963 after lying dormant for decades.

When it erupted, experts said global atmospheric temperatures dropped by 0.1-0.4 degrees Celsius.

Island evacuated as volcanoes rumble in Bali and Vanuatu

Thousands of people have been evacuated on the Indonesian island of Bali and on Ambae island in Vanuatu as two volcanoes threaten to erupt. The entire population of Ambae is being moved from the path of the "increasingly active" Marano volcano, also known as Lombenben, according to the Pacific nation's government.

On the Indonesian island of Bali, more than 144,000 people have been taken to shelters as authorities warn that Mount Agung, in the island's north, could erupt at any time. Both volcanoes sit on the Pacific Ring of Fire, an area of intense seismic activity that stretches 40,000 kilometers (25,000 miles) from New Zealand to South America. That they're showing signs of erupting at the same time is pure coincidence, said Benjamin Andrews, of the Smithsonian Institution's Global Volcanism Program.

Mexico's Popocatepetl volcano roared back to life early on Wednesday morning, spewing incandescent material and a large plume of ash and smoke into the sky.

The active volcano erupted about 4:45am local time and again at 8:00am local time in the fourth big eruption in recent days.

Mexico's national disaster-prevention agency says the eruption of the volcano, dubbed 'Don Goyo' by locals, was unrelated to the earthquake that shook the country earlier this month, according to Associated Press.

The eruptions came just a week after Mexico was hit by two major earthquakes, the second of which was a 7.1-magnitude quake on September 19 that killed more than 330 people and damaged 11,000 homes.

Popocatepetl has been active since the mid-1990s and some significant eruptions last year rocked communities living under the volcano's shadow.

There are more than 3,000 volcanoes in Mexico, but only 14 are considered active.

Deadly Indonesian volcano Mount Sinabung spewed plumes of ash 2.5km into the air as it exploded
While attention is focused on the potential imminent eruption of Mount Agung in Bali, another deadly Indonesian volcano has dramatically exploded.

Mount Sinabung, in northern Sumatra, spewed plumes of ash 2.5km into the air as it erupted at 1.23pm local time on Wednesday.

Thousands of villagers were evacuated from around the mountain, the most active of the country's 130 active volcanoes, and warned to stay at least 7km away.

Authorities feared lava flows could cascade down the mountain and destroy homes, as has happened several times.

The volcano explodes so frequently, warning signs are permanently stationed around it warning against going near it.

Only last month another eruption rocked the area, blasting ash 4.2km into the air and causing pyroclastic flows many kilometres across surrounding countryside.

Earlier in the year 10 people were killed in another eruption, with its death toll sitting at 20 in the past decade, including four high school students and their teacher on a school excursion.

Australian airlines are closely monitoring Bali's biggest volcano, which is expected to erupt any day.

Hundreds of dead birds have been filmed around Mount Agung as the intensity and frequency of tremors near the volcano increase.

Nearly 50,000 people have fled their homes, seeking shelter in squalid evacuation centres.

The threat isn't affecting popular tourist areas such as Kuta and Seminyak, which are outside the danger zones.

Mount Agung is about 75 kilometres (47 miles) from the tourist hub of Kuta, and has been rumbling since August, threatening to erupt for the first time in more than 50 years.

Bali's Mount Agung: Eruption could be hours away, unprecedented seismic activity

Mt Agung

Mount Agung in Bali is experiencing unprecedented levels of seismic activity and could erupt in a "matter of hours" if tremors continue, Indonesia's volcanology centre has said.

More than 75,000 people have been evacuated in the last few days as Agung, the highest point of the island, has experienced hundreds of internal volcanic earthquakes. "Instrumentally we have never recorded such high energy or seismicity from Mount Agung," Devy Kamil Syahbana, a seismologist from Indonesia's centre for volcanology and geological hazard mitigation, told the Guardian.

Data showed that Mount Agung experienced 844 volcanic earthquakes on Monday, and 300 to 400 earthquakes by midday on Tuesday, he said. "We need to pay attention because these kinds of earthquakes indicate the movement of magma and increase the probability of an eruption."

Evacuated people have sought shelter in hundreds of village halls and sports centres and in the homes of relatives in more than nine districts. President Joko Widodo is scheduled to visit evacuees at several camps on Tuesday. Authorities have urged people to stay out the danger zone, a designated five-to-seven-mile radius of the volcano.

The increasing frequency of deep and shallow volcanic earthquakes, as well as local tectonic tremors, is an indication that magma continues to move toward the surface. The alert status of Agung was raised to the highest levelon Friday evening following a significant spike in seismic activity. Kasbani, the head of the volcanology centre, told local media that if tremors continued, an eruption - the first in more than half a century - could be a "matter of hours" away.
