Magnitude 3.8 earthquake rocks Southcentral Alaska, on anniversary of 1964 quake

Earthquake graph
A magnitude-.3.8 earthquake struck east of Anchorage on Sunday -- which just happened to coincide with the 52nd anniversary of the devastating magnitude-9.2 earthquake that reshaped the Southcentral Alaska landscape.

According to information from the Alaska Earthquake Center, Sunday's brief temblor was centered just 7 miles southeast of Eagle River and 17 miles east of Anchorage, at a depth of 16.7 miles. It occurred at 8:18 p.m. The center initially assessed the magnitude at 4.0, but later revised the estimate downward.

It could be felt in Alaska's largest city.

Sunday's earthquake just happened to fall on March 27, the same day as the magnitude-9.2 Good Friday earthquake that struck 52 years earlier. That quake was the second-strongest ever recorded.

Oklahoma experiences 23% increase in earthquakes this year

oklahoma earthquakes
The total number of earthquakes across Oklahoma has increased 23 percent from this time last year, though most of the quakes are very small according to USGS data.

Oklahoma started the year slowly for the total number of quakes, though now has seen a large jump in the number of quakes registering 1.9 magnitude or smaller, year-to-date.

So far in 2016, the state has seen 142 of the very small quakes. At this time in 2015, the state registered 16.

Overall, 2016 has had a total of 825 quakes compared to 2015's 671.

Comment: While drilling activity may be driving some of the earthquake activity in Oklahoma, seismic events have been increasing globally:

Comment: The Local reports that this is the biggest earthquake in 100 years for northern Sweden.

According to the University of Helsinki's Institute of Seismology, Saturday's relatively strong 4.1 temblor beneath the northern part of the Gulf of Bothnia lasted about ten seconds. The epicentre of the quake was located about 45 kilometres off the coast of the town of Raahe.

The tremors prompted people in both Finland and Sweden to report they had felt the vibrations via social media.

Reports of people in Finland feeling the earthquake came from Oulu, Kemi, Pietarsaari and Vaasa.

Fire chief Marko Hottinen told Yle that there were no reports of damage and emergency services were not required in Finland.

Reports from people in Sweden who said they felt the quake came from the northern coastal towns of Umeå up to Piteå.

Strong tremor strikes off Atka Island, southwest Alaska

Atka Island Earthquake

A strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.4 has struck off Atka Island in the Andreanof Islands, which are part of the Aleutian Islands in southwest Alaska, seismologists say. No tsunami alerts have been issued.

The earthquake, which struck at 9:06 a.m. local time on Saturday, was centered about 51 miles (82 km) south of Atka, which is a small town located on the eastern side of Atka Island. It struck about 19.9 miles (32 km) deep, making it a shallow earthquake.

The U.S. Tsunami Warning Center said the earthquake was not strong enough to generate a tsunami, and no tsunami alerts have been issued, but the earthquake was likely felt on islands across the region.

Other details about Saturday's earthquake were not immediately available, and there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties from the sparsely-populated region.

6.2 magnitude earthquake strikes off Samoa

Samoa map
A 6.2 magnitude earthquake has struck off the Samoa islands, Geoscience Australia and the US Geological Survey (USGS) reported, adding that the epicenter of the quake is about 200km from Apia, the capital and largest city of the island country.

Apia has about 37,000 residents.

The earthquake depth is 29.8 km, USGS said. The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) put the depth of the earthquake at 2km.

According to the most recent USGS estimate, the magnitude of the quake is 5.8 and it took place just 96km from the town of Hihifo in Tonga.

There have not been any reports of injuries or damage, and no tsunami warning has been issued.

The part of South Pacific Ocean where Tonga and Samoa are located is considered to be one of the most seismically active areas of the world due to high rates of convergence between the Australia and Pacific plates, the USGS said.
