A 6.2-magnitude earthquake hit a coastal region in central Chile, US Geological Survey reports. It comes amid frequent aftershocks following a strong 8.3 quake last week.

The quake's epicenter was registered 30 kilometers southwest of the city of Ovalle in Chile's Coquimbo Region at a depth of 38 kilometers.

Another 5.1-magnitude quake followed minutes after the strong tremor, according to USGS.

Walker Lake-- Thousands of fish are dead after a Northern California reservoir ran dry overnight, reports CBS Sacramento.

Mountain Meadows reservoir also known as Walker Lake is a popular fishing hole just west of Susanville. Now the reservoir is dry and all the fish are dead.

Residents tell CBS Sacramento that people were fishing on the lake just last Saturday. But it drained like a bathtub overnight.

Resident Eddie Bauer has lived near the lake his entire life. He says that this is the first time he has ever seen the lake run dry. He and other residents now want answers as to why and how this could have happened.

CBS Sacramento reports that Pacific Gas & Electric Company own the rights to the water and use it for hydroelectric power.

No fewer than 3000 houses and farmlands have submerged in Makurdi and other riverine communities in Benue State following the overflow of the River Benue.

The flood has displaced scores of persons in the agrarian communities, just as it has damaged property worth millions of naira, including cars and food items.

Water from the River Benue has run over the coast and has completely covered the houses saturated in the area.

Experts believe the Acadian flycatcher got caught up in a fast-moving Atlantic weather system that took it from the eastern US to Dungeness in Kent

A bird never recorded before in the UK is believed to have landed in Kent, and then died.

Suspected to be an Acadian flycatcher from North America, the historic landing on the beach at Dungeness in Kent sparked one of the biggest mass gathering of twitchers in years.

They hope to catch a sight of the small robin-sized bird that should be basking in the tropical forests of Panama or Colombia.

But today it was nowhere to be seen with fears that the exhausted bird had died.

Somehow it had been caught up in a fast-moving Atlantic weather system that has taken it from its nesting grounds in eastern USA to the famous gravel headland overlooking the English Channel.

Black bear attacks man in Powell River, Canada

A 51-year-old man was hospitalized with minor injuries after being attacked by a black bear. The bear and its two cubs have since been destroyed by conservation officers.
Conservation officers are searching for a bear responsible for sending a 51-year-old man to hospital in the early hours of Thursday, September 24.

Powell River RCMP have confirmed that a man walking his dog on the 4700 block of Redonda Avenue, behind the Town Centre Mall, was attacked by a bear at approximately 5:30 am.

The man sustained only minor injuries in the attack and did not require BC Ambulance Service paramedics to transport him to Powell River General Hospital, Constable Tim Kenning told the Peak at 9 am.

Kenning said that the unnamed man told him "the bear came out of nowhere."

Evoking a sense of curiosity among the people, a halo appeared around the sun in the skies of Palakkad on Friday. A similar phenomenon was reported from Alappuzha and Kozhikode the other day. The halo appeared around the sun at Thursday noon in the skies of Alappuzha town. According to Met department, an atmospheric whirlpool formed in Tamil Nadu and Lakshadweep caused the halo.

The solar halo is formed when there is a surge in humidity in atmosphere. In fact it is the light which diffuses after hitting water particle in atmosphere that appears to be a halo. It is not a rare phenomenon.Atmospheric whirlpools are formed by concentration of air in a particular spot.

Comment: The increase in sun halos is likely a combination of possible comet dust loading and changes in the layers of the atmosphere is producing all sorts of anomalous phenomena.

A 6.0-magnitude quake hit off the Solomon Islands
A 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck off the Solomon Islands early Friday, US geologists said, but there were no initial reports of damage and no tsunami warnings were issued.

The quake struck 98 kilometres (60 miles) southeast of the capital Honiara in the early hours of Friday (around 1600 GMT Thursday) at a depth of approximately 23 kilometres (14 miles), USGS said.

The Solomons are part of the Pacific "Ring of Fire", a zone of tectonic activity known for its frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

In 2013, the Solomons were hit by a tsunami after an 8.0-magnitude quake, leaving at least 10 people dead and thousands homeless after buildings were destroyed.

The Colima Volcano continues to be active, sending a 1,500-meter column of smoke skyward at 7:08 this morning.

Civil Protection's national coordinator, Luis Felipe Puente Espinosa, reported the eruption on his Twitter account, advising that the smoke, with a low ash content, was moving southwest.

The ash expelled by the volcano consists of material less than two millimeters in diameter and moves with the wind. But rock projectiles from the Volcano of Fire, as it is also known, are a different matter.

They can be up to 50 millimeters in diameter and are sent shooting out of the crater at high speed, before falling to the ground. This volcanic material can cause damage and injuries in populated areas, particularly if they are hot, which can result in fires.

Biologists will perform a necropsy Thursday on a dead whale that washed up near Fremont to determine what caused its death, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

The 25-foot long carcass was discovered washed up on a rocky beach in the Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge on Tuesday just north of the Dumbarton Bridge, according to East Bay Regional Park District spokeswoman Carolyn Jones.

A park ranger spotted the whale carcass about 150 to 200 yards south of the Alameda Creek Channel, Jones said.

"We had a lot of whales washing up on shore," said Mary Jane Schramm from the National Marine Sanctuaries, Gulf of the Farallones.
