Fyodor Lukyanov: This time Trump really means business

The speed of his cabinet nomination announcements tells us that the Republican president-elect has a plan.

US President-elect Donald Trump has moved quickly to form his proposed new administration. His team is better prepared to take power than it was in 2016 - when neither the candidate himself nor the vast majority of his supporters believed he could win.

It's too early to draw far-reaching conclusions, but in general, the composition of the preferred government reflects the ideological and political coalition that has gathered around the president-elect. From the outside, it may look motley, but so far it is all in line with Trump's views.

Contrary to the perception actively propagated by Trump's opponents, he is not an unpredictable and inconsistent eccentric. More precisely, we should separate his character and mannerisms, which are flighty, from his overall worldview. The latter has not changed, not only in the years since Trump entered big politics, but more generally in his public life since the 1980s. It suffices to look through the old interviews of the famed tycoon to see this:
"'Communism (in the broadest sense) is evil', 'the allies must pay up', 'the American leadership does not know how to make favorable deals but I do'."
...and so on.

Comment: For the task of turning the country around, Trump is dedicated and sincere. We shall see if his progress turns pessimism to hope.

Trump's initial nominations for cabinet positions are a mixed bag, to say the least. Congress has yet to vet them, but the RINOs (Republicans in name only) can't block all of Trump's 'Avengers', surely? Joe & Niall run through the list in the first hour of this NewsReal, then assess the one major issue Team Trump could realistically 'solve' in the coming year: the Russia-Ukraine War.

Restoring Deterrence Will Prevent Endless Wars

On January 3, 2020, the Trump administration conducted a drone strike near Baghdad International Airport, killing Iranian Major General Qassem Soleimani.

Soleimani had a long record of waging surrogate wars against Americans, especially during the Iraq conflict and its aftermath.

After the Trump cancellation of the Iran Deal, followed by U.S. sanctions, Soleimani reportedly stepped up violence against regional American bases — most of which Trump himself ironically wished to remove.

A few days later, Iran staged a performance-art retaliatory strike against Americans in Iraq and Syria, assuming Trump had no desire for a wider Middle East war.

So, Iran launched 12 missiles that hit two U.S. airbases in Iraq. Supposedly, Tehran had warned the Trump administration of the impending attacks that killed no Americans. Later reports, however, suggested that some Americans suffered concussions, while more damage was done to the bases than was initially disclosed.

President Biden's nominee for Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA), David Johnson, promised to tackle allegations of IRS misconduct, including politically motivated audits and unfair targeting of small businesses, during his confirmation hearing before the Senate Finance Committee on Nov. 14. Johnson vowed to hold the IRS accountable for any abuse of power, ensuring that taxpayers are treated fairly.

At the hearing, Johnson addressed bipartisan concerns about the misuse of IRS authority, with lawmakers pressing him on the agency's practices and adherence to directives aimed at protecting small businesses and low-income taxpayers from increased audit rates.

The CIA/MI6 Skripal Conspiracy Exposed?

On October 14th, a much-delayed inquiry into the mysterious death of Dawn Sturgess, a British citizen who died in July 2018 after reputedly coming into contact with Novichok nerve agent left in Wiltshire by a pair of Russian spies, finally commenced. Already, the public show trial has unearthed tantalising evidence gravely undermining the official narrative of the poisoning of GRU defector Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia in Salisbury, in March that year.

These revelations emerged despite the British state's best efforts to sabotage the inquiry, and curtail its ability to ascertain the truth. For one, the Skripals have been prevented from testifying, despite formally requesting to do so. Such is the apparent risk of Russian intelligence attempting to target the pair anew, not even their video-recorded police interviews from the time can be entered into evidence. Meanwhile, the urgent question of what British intelligence and security services knew, and when they knew it, will not be explored.

Yet, unambiguous indications British spies and their American counterparts were well-aware the two Russians accused of attempting to murder the Skripals, and unwittingly killing Sturgess by leaving Novichok concealed in a perfume bottle in Salisbury, were visiting Britain in advance of their arrival, and sought to exploit this for their own malign purposes, have lain in plain sight for years. Whether such foreknowledge implies the CIA and MI6 were in reality behind the abortive hit remains a matter of interpretation.

Taoiseach Simon Harris said "the time is now right to ask the Irish people to give a new mandate," as he confirmed that a general election would be held in Ireland on Friday, 29 November.

Ireland's Prime Minister, or Taoiseach, Simon Harris triggered the start of the 2024 general election after he confirmed on Friday that he requested a dissolution of the current Irish parliament, or Dáil.

In a short address in Dublin, Harris thanked his colleague in the centre-right Fine Gael party as well as coalition partners Fianna Fáil and the Greens, but acknowledged they "did not agree on every issue."

Trump transition team does end run around hostile FBI: Background checks on Cabinet picks to be vetted by private firms

President-elect Donald Trump's transition team is skipping the protocol of using the FBI to conduct background checks, according to a report.

Instead, the president-elect's team is turning to private companies to vet administrative appointees, people familiar with transition planning told CNN. Trump has criticized the FBI for its slow investigation process and feared it would delay his ability to roll out his agenda.

A security clearance is needed for some Cabinet positions, such as attorney general, and the process of obtaining one includes an FBI background check.

Dan Meyer, a national security attorney, told CNN Trump's mistrust of the FBI and the deep state has made him go completely rogue.

Comment: Considering everything the FBI did to hamstring the first Trump presidency, from entrapping General Flynn to Operation Crossfire Hurricane, Trump's wise to keep the FBI out of the administration's selection process as much as he is able. Ukrainian MP says Trump win means the end of Zelensky

The outcome of the US presidential election signals the end of the Ukrainian leader's "terrorist" reign, Artyom Dmitruk told RT

Donald Trump's victory in the US presidential election means that Vladimir Zelensky will soon be removed from power, which will be great for Ukraine, exiled lawmaker Artyom Dmitruk has told RT.

The Ukrainian MP fled from his home country earlier this year, saying he feared for his safety after taking a public stance against Kiev's crackdown on the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. He went to the UK and is currently fighting an extradition request, which he claims is based on fabricated charges issued at Zelensky's orders.

Comment: Trump's opinion of Zelensky is not high:

Trump wasn't above trolling Zelensky directly to his face either. Zelensky's expression is priceless.

Trump's best moves would be to say to Zelensky that the mess in Ukraine was the previous administration's making, that he has no interest in continuing it, and to sit down with the Russians. The EU is, of course, horrified at the thought, and in a panic that the U.S. might leave the scene. They can be told that if 'Project Ukraine' is so important to them, they can continue to fund it themselves, but the U.S. is done.

Jewish pressure group attacks Trump's attorney general pick

The Anti-Defamation League has accused US President-elect Donald Trump's nominee for attorney general, Matt Gaetz, of "trafficking in anti-Semitism" and called for him to be barred from office.

Trump announced Gaetz's nomination on Wednesday, declaring that the Florida Republican would end the "partisan weaponization of our justice system." Gaetz is a hardline conservative and staunch ally of Trump, but his nomination rankled some establishment Republicans and angered the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), a Jewish advocacy group that typically supports the Democratic Party.

ADL CEO Jonathan Greenblatt wrote on X on Wednesday:
"Rep. Matt Gaetz has a long history of trafficking in anti-Semitism - from explaining his vote against the bipartisan Anti-Semitism Awareness Act by invoking the centuries-old trope that Jews killed Jesus to defending the Great Replacement Theory and inviting a Holocaust denier as his 2018 State of the Union guest. He should not be appointed to any high office, much less one overseeing the impartial execution of our nation's laws."
Greenblatt did not fully explain the examples of Gaetz's conduct that he cited.

Comment: All politicians stand on or near 'the eraser's edge'. Great politicians use this to their advantage. Gaetz? What we don't know we shall see.

PM's aides said suspected of blackmailing IDF officer to alter records from Oct. 7

Top aides to Benjamin Netanyahu are suspected of trying to blackmail an IDF officer in the military secretariat of the Prime Minister's Office in order to modify minutes of top-level security discussions in the hours before the Hamas attack that sparked the war in Gaza, Hebrew media reported Friday.

The reports provided new details of a slew of security-related probes into the PMO that have been revealed in recent days, which are largely under a court-mandated gag order.

Meanwhile, Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara has approved an investigation into Netanyahu himself as the scandals around his office multiply, the Maariv newspaper reported. Law enforcement officials cited in Haaretz and Ynet accused the police of trying to minimize the severity of the scandals.

A top political figure cited by Channel 12 said:
"The investigations into the PMO were only a reaffirmation of what everyone already knew. The prime minister's people didn't shy away from any means to change the narrative and exonerate the premier from the failures that led to the war."
Netanyahu's office pushed back on the allegations, saying they were "another lie in the web of lies that some are trying to spin about the PMO."

Comment: 'Sensitive footage' of officer allegedly stolen from PMO worker with whom he had relationship, reports say; AG said to okay probe of Netanyahu himself; PMO decries 'web of lies'!

The above is Israel's version of a political soap opera with all the elements of affair, intrigue, betrayal and blackmail. But hold the applause. This plot has just begun to unravel!
