And at the dead center of it all is Eric Schmidt. Well before Americans understood the threat of Covid-19, Schmidt had been on an aggressive lobbying and public relations campaign pushing precisely the "Black Mirror" vision of society that Cuomo has just empowered him to build. At the heart of this vision is seamless integration of government with a handful of Silicon Valley giants โ€” with public schools, hospitals, doctor's offices, police, and military all outsourcing (at a high cost) many of their core functions to private tech companies.

- The Intercept: Screen New Deal
Each crisis in the 21st century has been aggressively and ruthlessly wielded into a massive wealth and power grab by the American oligarchy and national security state. The big power grab following 9/11 centered around whittling away constitutional rights via mass surveillance in the name of "keeping us safe", while the money grab after last decade's financial crisis concentrated wealth and assets into fewer hands while entrenching financial feudalism and making the Federal Reserve and mega banks even more powerful.

Despite the success of this diabolical and intentional concentration of money and power, there's still too much privacy, freedom and independent wealth around for the imperial oligarchy to feel comfortable. As such, the current pandemic is being used to put the finishing touches on whatever little political and economic freedom remains in these United States.

The lessons learned from prior crises are being rolled out simultaneously this time around while people remain incapacitated at home due to Covid-19. The 2008/09 financial collapse taught those in power they can get away with unprecedented, unaccountable theft during an economic and stock market crash. Similarly, 9/11 demonstrated people will relinquish civil liberties without much protest when immersed in a state of fear.

Best of the Web: Did European athletes catch coronavirus while competing at World Military Games in Wuhan in OCTOBER?

French athletes
The French delegation were competing in the 7th World Military Games in Wuhan - just 20 days before the first Chinese person officially became ill with coronavirus - with 402 athletes present, along with 10,000 other athletes from all over the world
French athletes believe they caught coronavirus at the World Military Games in Wuhan in October, 20 days before the first recorded case in China.

It comes after it was revealed that Frenchman Amirouche Hammar, 43, had been infected with COVID-19 outside Paris as early as December.

The hospital where Hammar was treated for chest pains has since re-tested samples and found the fishmonger was positive for the virus on December 27. It is not known where he caught the virus, although his wife works close to Charles de Gaulle airport.

A number of French athletes who were at the World Military Games from October 18 to 27 have since described coming down with severe flu-like symptoms while at the event.

Elodie Clouvel, a world champion modern pentathlete, was asked on March 25 whether she was anxious about spending the summer in Japan for the Olympics. She told Loire 7: 'No because I think that with Velentin (Belaud, her partner, also a pentathlete) we have already had the coronavirus, well the COVID-19.'

The 31-year-old went on: 'We were in Wuhan for the World Military Games at the end of October. And afterwards, we all fell ill. Valentin missed three days of training. Me, I was sick too. [...] I had things I had never had before. We weren't particularly worried because no one was talking about it yet.'

Comment: A US delegation of athletes was also in attendance at the games in Wuhan. The Chinese put out reports in late January that they suspected US military troops brought the virus along with them. Given the fact that the science points to this strain of Coronavirus being lab-created, and some other pieces of data, a more apt name for the disease might then be: 'the American Virus'.

In any event, it's clear that this thing was circulating the globe by December. Which means the Deep Staters knew all about it long before March when they decided to capitalize on it by instituting this batsh*t crazy lockdown.

Republican Senator Rand Paul has challenged National Institutes of Allergy and Infectious Diseases director Dr Anthony Fauci on the nation's Covid-19 policy, suggesting the US is waiting too long to reopen.

Paul, who also has a medical degree, called for "a little bit of humility in our belief that we know what's best for our economy," questioning Fauci's support for a prolonged economic shutdown during a Senate hearing on the government's coronavirus response on Tuesday.

Comment: Fauci better be cautious of showing his face outside the Democrat DC cocoon.

Best of the Web: Viruses are the new terrorists: British PM introduces five-tier 'coronavirus alert system'

5 tier chart
Boris Johnson has announced a five-tier alert system to rank the threat from coronavirus - although experts said it was not immediately clear how independent or effective the scheme would be.

The current threat level of the pandemic will be categorised on a scale of one to five in different parts of the country, based on assessments by a new "joint biosecurity centre".

The system is designed to mirror the independent terror alert system, which ranks the threat to the public from "low" to "critical" and helps decide what protective measures are required.

The prime minister said in his broadcast to the nation that the alert system would help the country "avoid going back to square one". Alert levels, he added, would be determined by the number of cases and the R number, or transmission rate, of the virus.

Comment: Quite the polished sales pitch from Boris! He needs everyone to believe...

Comment: They want us to believe authorities always know best. They have developed new and improved tracking systems (with bonus future adaptability) to prove it. They're here for us...in our time of need.
Britain mulls implementing a 'quarantine' at the end of May or early June for incoming visitors, speculating 14 days might just do it. With Macron's persuasion, France temporarily received 'a pass', responding that "any measures on either side would be taken in a concerted and reciprocal manner."

Airlines chimed in, saying:

"We will be asking for assurances that this decision has been led by the science and that government has a credible exit plan, with weekly reviews to ensure the restrictions are working and still required," the trade body, Airlines UK, said on Saturday.

Karen Dee, the chief executive of the Airport Operators Association warned the move will "not only have a devastating impact on the UK aviation industry, but also on the wider economy" altogether.

Michelle, a stickler for clarification, has come up with the most logical answer to this whole global fiasco:

Best of the Web: Militia mobilize to thwart arrest of 77-year-old Michigan barber who reopened his shop

Comment: Michiganders know how to do freedom!

Manke
© Sarabeth Maney/The Flint Journal via APKarl Manke, 77, waves to people gathered for a press conference, having defied the governor's order not to conduct business.
The Michigan Militia says the police will not be allowed to arrest 77-year-old Owosso, Mich., barber, Karl Manke, who has defied Governor Whitmer's orders that all non-essential businesses stay closed. Friday night, Michigan State Police delivered a health protection order from Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel's office ordering that Manke close his doors.

A local Fox affiliate spoke to Daniel Brewer, one of the militia members standing up for the barber's right to work.
"Yesterday six troopers came in to enforce the governor's order or to issue a cease or desist order so we are here to make sure he doesn't get arrested. We're willing to stand in front of that door and block the entrance so the police will have no entry there today."
As relationships heat up between overreaching government agents and protesters who want to open the economy, people like Manke are being completely let down by the system that claims to want to help them, leading to more anger and outrage than government officials are ready to handle. Manke obeyed the original orders and closed his shop, but when he was turned down for unemployment โ€” twice โ€” he said he had no choice but to go back to work to survive.

Best of the Web: Here comes the Covid-19 Gestapo: Illinois Democrat introduces $100 billion 'contact tracing army' bill. It's name? 'HR 6666 TRACE'

Ein Reich, Ein Volk, Ein Corona

Illinois Democratic Rep. Bobby Rush has introduced the H.R. 6666 TRACE Act, which includes a $100 billion grant program which would authorize the Secretary of Health and Human Services to create an army of contact tracers operating through healthcare, schools and nonprofit entities, who would perform COVID-19 diagnostic testing "through mobile health units and, as necessary, at individuals' residences, and for other purposes."
Absolutely. My bill, the COVID-19 TRACE Act (H.R. 6666) would create a $100 BILLION grant program for local organizations to hire, train, and pay individuals to operate mobile testing units and conduct contact tracing in hot spots and medically underserved areas. https://t.co/5YGK34ifsU

"Until we have a vaccine to defeat this dreaded disease, contact tracing in order to understand the full breadth and depth of the spread of this virus is the only way we will be able to get out from under this," Rush says on his website.

USA

Best of the Web: The political battleground of the virus has been drawn

protestors
U.S. professor of history at John Hopkins University, Mike Vlahos, in a series of short interviews with John Batchelor, tells us how Coronavirus has become a fiery pivot, pushing different leaders in the U.S. to take existential stands on how to deal with this virus. With various separate American states insisting to pursue directly polarised paths: Mandated 'sheltering' (the U.S. term for distancing) versus economic opening; States versus the Federal government; Blue versus Red; Dems versus GOP; 'authoritarianism' versus Laissez Faire and traditional American liberties - and now, internal state, Blue-Red conflicts (i.e. Ventura County versus California's Governor, on the burning issue of open or closed beaches); and even, counties versus states.

Vlahos notes the point is that that the battleground, thanks to the virus, has turned existential. No more is Blue/Red just a crafted rhetorical flourish - It is embodied; it is of biological flesh; it cuts into flesh - even as the virus' future is unknown. In fact, the unknown deepens fears. The choice: 'food on the table' in a re-opened the economy (even at the real risk of those 'doctors of death' returning), or to play safe, passively, with distancing. The collective psyche is split; passions are raised; weapons are flourished, and militia parade. This is not theatre: Its fervour is suffused into daily life: masks or not; socialise or not; work or not.

Best of the Web: 'Arrest me': Elon Musk defies coronavirus lockdown restrictions and reopens Tesla plant in California

Elon Musk confirmed Monday that Tesla has resumed production at its California plant in defiance of the state's coronavirus lockdown restrictions.
Elon Musk confirmed Monday that Tesla has resumed operations at its main California plant in defiance of the state's coronavirus lockdown restrictions - daring authorities to arrest him for the violation.

The plant in Fremont, south of San Francisco, had been closed since March 23 in an effort to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

But early Monday evening, Musk confirmed in a tweet that Tesla is restarting production at the facility 'against Alameda County rules.'

'I will be on the line with everyone else,' he continued. 'If anyone is arrested, I ask that it only be me.'

Comment: At least there is someone with some power fighting to do the right thing amid the insanity of the lockdown, serving his own interests or not.

Best of the Web: US has seen NO INCREASE in overall deaths in 2020, yet Americans continue ceding all rights to the state

Some are awake. Soon they will become the majority, and then the fireworks commence...
Americans are faced with the following choice - continue to follow the government mandated lock down while watching their life savings erode (based on faulty projections and models regarding the China coronavirus) - or get back to work.

In the movie the Matrix, the lead character, Neo, is faced with the stark reality - that we are all slaves. But Neo is given an opportunity. He is given a choice between taking a red pill or the blue pill.
After this there is no turning back. You take the blue pill, your story ends. You wake up in bed and believe whatever you want to.

You take the red pill and you stay in wonderland and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes. Remember, all I'm offering is the truth."
