Antarctica South Pole Station Sets New Record Low: -100.8°F...Media AWOL

According to the University of Wisconsin, Madison here, on June 11, 2012, the South Pole Station measured a new record low temperature.

The mercury dropped to -73.8°C/-100.8°F, breaking the previous minimum temperature record of -73.3°C/-99.9°F set in 1966.

Must be because of global warming!

Well, almost . . .

To get into what is known in the biz as "high temperature" cryogenics you need to get down to the temperature of liquid LN2 which is −196 °C, −321 °F or 77 °K.

It's fun stuff, a slow chill down to temperature, then 100hrs of soak then a slow return to ambient makes all kinds of audio stuff sound demonstrably better, cutting tools last longer, race car engines produce more power, clutches and disc brakes run forever, brass instruments sound smoother and easier to play, panty hose last longer, and on and on . . . Just don't get any on you . . . :-)

there's a difference ...

between cryotherapy and cryogenics. Whole body cryotherapy goes no lower than about -110°C, for a few minutes. Cryogenics applies to materials and goes much lower for much longer.
So Laura is right, we could do mass cryotherapy in the antarctica. Then quickly back on the plane...

All I knew to this point was to seriously avoid getting any part of myself anywhere near the temperature of LN2.

Even so, I gotta Google this . . . why would would one chill one's self so severely, even if only briefly ? ?
