Meteor fireball over the Mediterranean Sea (Jan. 18)

This bolide was spotted over Spain on January 18, at 19:20 local time (equivalent to 18:20universal time). The fireball was observed by a wide number of casual eyewitnesses, who reported it on social networks. The event was generated by a rock (a meteoroid) from an asteroid that hit the atmosphere at about 50,000 km/h. The fireball overflew the Mediterranean Sea. It began at an altitude of about 78 km above the sea, moved southeast, and ended at a height of around 29 km above the sea.

This bright meteor was recorded in the framework of the SMART project, operated by the Southwestern Europe Meteor Network (SWEMN) from the meteor-observing stations located at Calar Alto, Sierra Nevada, Sevilla, Huelva, and La Sagra (Granada). The event has been analyzed by the main investigator of the SMART project: Dr. Jose M. Madiedo, from the Institute of Astrophysics of Andalusia (IAA-CSIC).19:20on the night (peninsular local time) of January 18, this fireball was recorded by the detectors of the SMART project. This fireball could also be observed by many witnesses who echoed the phenomenon on social networks. Most of these people were in the provinces of Malaga, Granada and Almeria.

This bolide was spotted from Spain on January 2, at 5:30 local time (equivalent to 4:30 universal time). The event was generated by a rock (a meteoroid) from a comet that hit the atmosphere at about 83,000 km/h. The fireball overflew Morocco. It began at an altitude of about 98 km over the center of the region of Fez-Mequinez, moved southeast, and ended at a height of around 26 km over the east of the same region.

This bright meteor was recorded in the framework of the SMART project, operated by the Southwestern Europe Meteor Network (SWEMN) from the meteor-observing stations located at Calar Alto, Sierra Nevada, Sevilla, La Sagra (Granada), Huelva, and El Aljarafe . The event has been analyzed by the principal investigator of the SMART project: Dr. Jose M. Madiedo, from the Institute of Astrophysics of Andalusia (IAA-CSIC).

Bright meteor fireball over the south of Spain (Jan. 14)

This stunning bolide was spotted over Spain on January 14, at 22:27 local time (equivalent to 21:27universal time). It was almost as bright as the full Moon. The fireball was observed by a wide number of casual eyewitnesses, who reported it on social networks. The event was generated by a rock (a meteoroid) from an asteroid that hit the atmosphere at about 48,000 km/h.

The fireball overflew south of Spain. It began at an altitude of about 86 km over southwest of the province of Ciudad Real (region of Castilla-La Mancha), moved east, and ended at a height of around 23 km over the same province. The preliminary analysis of this event shows that the rock was not fully destroyed in the atmosphere: a small part of the meteoroid survived and reached the ground as a meteorite.
