Winter storm dumps up to 2 meters of snowfall in the Alps causing problems, with another meter forecast

SNOW
That it snows in the mountains in December is not at all exceptional. But in recent hours, up to two meters of snow fell in the Alps and that causes problems here and there. There is also an avalanche danger in many places.

Traffic in particular will experience a lot of disruption on Sunday. There are currently no trains running on the Brenner Pass between Austria and Italy. Car traffic is also partly blocked.

There are power supply problems throughout South Tyrol, according to the civil defense. Some 1,400 firefighters have been active since Sunday morning. The highest avalanche warning applies in East Tyrol in Austria. That is why avalanches are generated spontaneously, some of them very large, the local authorities warn.

Beirut experiences historic hailstorm, leaving Lebanese city covered in white blanket for hours

hail
Lebanon's capital Beirut and the surrounding suburbs experienced what meteorologists named a "historical hailstorm," which covered the capital in a white blanket for hours, causing massive floods and impeding traffic on the major coastal highway.

Al Arabiya English reached out to Elias Saadeh, founder of Lebanon Weather Forecast, who mentioned that Saturday's phenomenon is due to severe supercell clouds. It lasted around an hour, coupled with severe thunderstorms and heavy hailstones.

"This supercell affected only the coastal area around Beirut and its suburbs. A supercell effect is always local. Weather stations in Beirut recorded 50mm of rainfall in a lapse of 25 minutes. This quantity is considered enormous since it is equivalent to pouring 50 liters of water in each square meter in 25 minutes. Moreover, this supercell caused a drastic drop in temperature from 21°C to 13.5°C in a couple of minutes," added Saadeh.

A winter storm battered parts of New England on Saturday, bringing high winds and heavy snow that knocked out power to more than 200,000 customers across the region.

The National Weather Service issued winter storm warnings for much of New England. The storm was expected to wind down by Sunday evening, it said, but not before leaving about a foot of snow across most of the region, with as much as 18 inches in some areas.

"The combination of heavy snowfall rates and strong wind will lead to treacherous travel conditions, whiteout visibilities, and the potential for tree damage/power outages," the Weather Service said on Saturday.

In Maine, more than 196,000 customers lost power on Saturday, according to the website PowerOutage. More than 25,000 customers in Massachusetts, more than 46,000 in New Hampshire and more than 2,000 in Connecticut were also left in the dark.
