What a scare and what a mess! The driver of a Coca-Cola van unknowingly drove into a sinkhole early Friday morning on Strickland Landing Road in Autaugaville. Thankfully, he was not injured.

"He was wearing his seat belt for an event like that. That's a pretty good drop," said Autauga County EMA Director Ernie Baggett.

How big of a drop? Twelve feet deep and 30 feet across! Big enough to swallow the van.

And all Brandon Stodghill could do was watch and have patience. "A very big inconvenience," he explained.

Brandon was among the more than a dozen residents stranded on the other side of the sinkhole.

Farmer in China loses 25 tons of fish when 16-ft wide sinkhole opens in his pond

China sinkhole
Yang, a farmer in Guiping, lost more than 25 tons after a sinkhole (pictured) appeared in his pond.
An unfortunate farmer lost more than 25 tonnes of fish last week after a sinkhole appeared in the pond where they were reared.

The farm, part of a local collective in Guiping, south China, was being run by a man identified by his surname Yang, according to People's Daily Online.

Although the cause of the incident has not been officially determined, there has been speculation that the excavation at a local quarry is to blame. Locals reported that water levels in the pond were seen falling at a dramatic rate from about 4am local time on March 24.
China sinkhole
By about 9am, the pond had almost completely drained. All that was left was a gaping abyss with a diameter of more than 16 feet. What's left of the water in the pond was still flowing down the hole, showing no signs of stopping.

According to reports, local residents suspect that nearby quarrying was the cause of the sinkhole as several similar sinkholes have appeared in the fields in the area.

The incident is now under investigation.

© Terry Pierson/Press EnterpriseThere is a hole in the backyard of Tasha Jenkins home more than 20 feet deep where her lawn use to be in Riverside. She was trying to put a ladder into the hole to see how deep it was when it fell in.
A hole estimated to be four feet wide and 30-40 feet deep opened in the backyard of a Riverside home Wednesday morning, March 23, leaving the people who live there scratching their heads.

Tasha Jenkins, 23, said she and her boyfriend discovered the hole at their Pennsylvania Avenue home after he began to drain their above ground backyard pool. Water began falling down the hole. Jenkins' boyfriend then came inside and grabbed her as she was doing dishes and had her come outside.

"He said, 'come here' but his face was so in shock. ... I was scared something had happened to the kids," she said. "But when I came outside, he said, 'what do you hear, what does it sound like?' It sounded like a waterfall."
The sound was the above ground pool's water flowing into the deep hole where there had once been grass and dirt.

Huge landslide caught on camera in central China

landslide
A massive landslide was captured on camera on March 18 as it buried a highway in Anhua County, located in central China's Hunan Province. Despite its scale, no casualties or vehicle damage have been reported.

Chinese state media CCTV speculate that a heavy rainstorm on Thursday night contributed to the minute-long landslide, which hit the G536 Expressway at around 9:10am.

Speaking on behalf of her father who shot the video, the woman surnamed Zou told CCTV that drivers had stopped after noticing stones and other debris falling quickly down the hillside.

Chen Liping, an Anhua County highway bureau official, was quoted as saying that a clear-up operation would begin immediately and the highway would be back open by the end of the following day.

With mountains and hills making up more than 80 percent of Hunan Province, the region is no stranger to landslides. In July 2014, five people were killed and over 1,300 homes were destroyed after torrential rains triggered a number of major landslides across the province.

Two trees and a Renault disappear into huge sinkhole near Naples, Italy

A Renault Twingo and two small trees have disappeared into a huge sinkhole in the central square of Afragola, a town near Naples.

Nobody was hurt in the incident, which happened in the early hours of Monday morning.

The opening of the chasm, which was seven metres long, seven metres wide and seven metres deep, damaged underground pipes and cut off the water supply to some local residents.

A video of the sinkhole and its contents can be seen below.

The gigantic hole is thought to have been caused by either an underground drain or tunnel caving in.

Several tunnels are known to run under the square and once connected the crypt of the nearby church of San Giorgio to the town's castle.

In February last year, a sinkhole caused by a burst water pipe saw 300 people evacuated from their homes in Naples, while in October a female driver watched her car disappear into a sinkhole in Catania.

Homes have been evacuated after a massive sinkhole appeared in their street overnight. The enormous hole suddenly developed just yards from the front doors of three detached properties in Plains, Lanarkshire. The crater covers a large section of road in Moffat View in the village and is estimated to be 30ft wide and 10ft deep.

Residents have been told to stay away from their ยฃ130,000 properties until work is carried out to assess and fix the damage. Locals have speculated a former mineshaft had collapsed following heavy rains. The cul-de-sac had been closed off since Wednesday morning and was being inspected by workers today. However homeowners have blasted North Lanarkshire Council and claimed they had highlighted concerns over the area last month.

John Riley, 61, said he was now living in a hotel as work was carried out. He took to Facebook to complain, adding: "All three residents evacuated at short notice by Fire Service. "Emergency team told us we usually get the evacuees into the local school for a few hours and give them telephone and Internet access, refreshments and any other support until they can be safely rehoused or make other arrangements."

"My insurance has put us up in Premier inn for two weeks," John continued. "I refused the 4th floor flat in Holehills whose condition was "unknown". "After seven weeks of pleading with North Lanarkshire Council, including the offer of sharing the geo-tech info I had obtained and was refused.

Officials evacuated a shopping center after a sinkhole caused a gas main to rupture in Moraga Sunday afternoon.

Moraga police said residents of 60 to 100 homes have been asked to shelter in place as PG&E crews repair the gas main break.

The break occurred at 5 p.m. at Center Street and Rheem Boulevard after a traffic signal pole fell into a sinkhole and ruptured a gas line, Acting Police Chief Jon King said.

About 450 people from nearby businesses were evacuated because of the break, which was producing a strong odor in the area.

Police said customers of the Rheem Theater, 24 Hour Fitness and other businesses in the area have been evacuated.
