Arkansas city 'rocks' massive sinkhole

Harrison city workers on Wednesday began dumping large rocks into the huge sinkhole that began to encroach on a home in Harrison over the weekend.

The hole opened up after heavy rain Friday, April 21, in an area off Chelsea Circle.

The hole is in Will and Sherry Presley's back yard. After even heavier rain last weekend, the hole grew exponentially and began to near the Presleys' home.

They said drainage has been an issue in the area ever since they moved into the house 10 years ago.

Sherry said they have been asking for help from the city from about the time following the first rain after they moved in.

But she said they have been told that flooding that occurs during heavy rain is not the city's responsibility and that because a portion of that property is outside the city limits, none of it qualifies as city property.

Maui police have closed the Piʻilani/Hāna Highway at Mile 39 due to a "large sink hole," which has made the road impassable.

Police say the closure is on the Kaupō side of the Alalele Bridge.

A similar incident was reported about two weeks ago, on April 12, 2017, in the same area. Police have confirmed that this is the same sink hole and that it has re-opened.

There is no estimated time for when the road will be reopened.

County of Maui Communications Director Rod Antone said Crews from the Public Works Department have closed the road to non-emergency vehicles until repairs can be made.

Antone said crews expect the road to be closed overnight and open again tomorrow after workers can cover the sinkhole with metal plating.

Motorists should take an alternate route until repairs are complete.

Philippine residents discover sinkhole within Badian River

Residents of a quiet village in Southern Cebu were surprised to see that a huge hole had formed in the middle of a river.

The sinkhole was discovered on Saturday morning in Barangay Banhigan, Badian town, 106 kilometers south of Cebu City. According to PO1 Rodjie Alicaway of the Badian Police Station, a concerned citizen alerted police about the presence of the sinkhole, which was two meters wide.

At 6:20 a.m. on Saturday, investigators immediately proceeded to the area and saw that right in the middle of the river was a huge cavity with a depth they had yet to determine. "We tried to insert a 20-meter-long bamboo into the sinkhole and yet it failed to touch the bottom of the hole. It must be very deep," said Alicaway in a phone interview with Cebu Daily News.

Police then reported the matter to Badian Mayor Carmencita Lumain for proper action. The police have cordoned the area to prevent people and their animals from passing through that part of the river to avoid accidents. "We're afraid that there might be those who will fall into the hole," Alicaway said.

Massive chunk of road disappears in Rawdon, Quebec

A massive chunk of a main Rawdon street disappeared on Tuesday morning, the second such sinkhole to open in the area in the last few weeks.

Officials say it will take at least three months to repair.

Nobody was injured in the road collapse on Queen St. but residents said they are concerned about how much worse the incident could have been, with two schools just down the road.

According to Rawdon Mayor Bruno Guilbault, a resident saw the beginning of the collapse at about 6 a.m. Tuesday. Power in the area was shut down due to concern the erosion could topple several nearby power lines.

With large amounts of spring runoff water flooding the area in recent weeks, the area in which the sinkhole opened had been monitored by officials for several days. The road had undergone several inspections per day, including one as recently as midnight, just hours before the collapse began.

"An inspection was made last night," said Guilbault. "It happens sometimes. We don't know exactly what happened, if it was the rain, or the snow thaw. We don't know."

Residents in an Orange County neighborhood said a sinkhole opened up near their homes.

The hole forced crews to shut down a road in the Orchard Hill subdivision on Cypress Hill Road, not far from State Road 429.

Residents said the hole was filled with dirt and it's not blocked by barricades.

"It's pretty scary. We don't want it to spread," said Heather Kelly.

Kelly and her family live feet away from what the county calls an active sinkhole. "It's a lot wider now than it was in the first place," said Kelly.

Residents said the sinkhole was 6 inches deep and, before it was filled, it had grown to a depth of 12-feet.

"We're always concerned. This is a new home. We've been here for about a year," Kelly said.

An enormous sinkhole has opened up on a street in Pinole and is threatening a large retirement community.

The wet weather has exacerbated a shifting soil condition behind the Bay Park Retirement Community on the 2600 block of Appian Way

"You could actually stand three people up in the hole," said Bay Park resident Sylvia Gott.

Gott has watched for weeks now as the sinkhole which has swallowed the access road behind the building has grown to about 50 feet wide.

"I'm very concerned about it," said Gott. "I'm glad they brought in the generator so quickly because we've been on generator power basically the whole time."

Enormous sinkhole swallows bus and car in Chennai, India

B Gunaseelan, a bus driver with the Chennai Metropolitan Transport Corporation, sensed a flat tyre soon after he had stopped the bus at the Thousand Lights bus stop on Chennai's Mount Road on Sunday. He alerted the conductor and looked out of the window: it was not the tyre, the road was caving in.

Gunaseelan immediately asked all passengers to get off. "I still didn't know that the boring work of Chennai Metro Rail tunnel was under way. As we helped the passengers get off, the front part of the bus kept sinking into the crater," he said. As those on the bus disembarked, R Pradeep, a physician who was following the bus, drove into the crater.

On realising that the road was caving in, he tried to drive past the crater, but was trapped inside it with the doors of his car jammed. Pradeep escaped unhurt as people stepped in and brought him out of the car.
