Dozens of people have been killed and many are feared dead in flash floods and landslides triggered by intense monsoon rains in northern and eastern India over the past three days. News agency Reuters reported that at least 50 people have died in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Odisha over the last three days.
The rains lashed hundreds of villages, swept away mud houses, flooded roads and destroyed bridges in some parts of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. The Indian Meteorological Department predicted that heavy to very heavy rain would continue to fall in the region for the next two days.
Five people who went missing after heavy rains triggered flash floods and landslides in Himachal Pradesh remained untraceable on Sunday, a senior official told news agency PTI.
As many as 22 people were killed and 12 injured in rain-related incidents on Saturday in the state. The maximum damage was reported from Mandi, Kangra and Chamba districts.
Almost 700 people have now lost their lives as a result of weeks of monsoon rains in Pakistan, including 42 people who died in the last 2 days. Over 1.5 million people have now been affected, with thousands moving to relief camps for safety.
Pakistan has already received over 95 per cent of its total normal monsoon rainfall. The heavy rain continues to fall and Padidan in Sindh Province recorded 595 mm in 48 hours to 20 August 2022.
Since the start of the monsoon in mid-June this year, heavy rain has caused houses to collapse, flash floods, mudslides and landslides. Higher temperatures and heavy rain caused Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOF) in mountainous areas of Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Sudden rainstorm triggers landslide and diverts river resulting in floods
Sixteen people are dead and 36 others missing after a flash flood hit Qinghai province in western China amid the ongoing torrential rains, according to Chinese media reports.
Heavy and sudden downpours in Datong Hui and Tu Autonomous County of Qinghai province started late on Wednesday, causing flooding in the mountains and triggering landslides, according to China's state broadcaster CCTV.
The flash floods affected an area with more than 6,000 people and over 1,500 houses, CCTV said.
The death toll from a flash flood in the western Chinese province of Qinghai rose to 23, state news agency Xinhua reported Saturday.
Eight people remain missing and 23 others classified as missing have been found, the agency reported.
The initial figure offered by the regional government was of four dead and 27 missing, while this last count dates from 8:00 p.m. local time Friday (12:00 GMT), after search and rescue tasks on the ground.
The torrential rain began at about 10:25 p.m. local time (2:25 p.m. GMT) Wednesday in a mountainous area of โโDatong County, located in the northern part of Xining Municipality, the capital of Qinghai.
Shortly after 07:00 local time Thursday (23:00 GMT on Wednesday), authorities declared a Level 2 emergency, the second highest of the four into which China's flood warning system is divided.
More than 6,000 people have been affected by the disaster and 1,500 residents have been transferred to local schools, which act as temporary shelter.
Since the beginning of the summer, torrential floods have left dozens dead and more than a million homeless in provinces such as Hunan, Sichuan and Gansu.
Last summer, floods in the central province of Henan, caused by rainfall of an intensity not seen in decades, submerged entire neighborhoods and subway stations and caused more than 300 deaths.
The death toll from a mountain torrent triggered by heavy rains in northwest China's Qinghai Province has risen to 26 as of 4 p.m. Sunday, with another five people still missing, according to local authorities.
A total of 6,245 residents of six villages in the Datong Hui and Tu Autonomous County have been affected by heavy rains, which began at 10:25 p.m. on Wednesday, according to the emergency response headquarters for the natural disaster.
The downpours lashed Datong, triggering flash floods and mudslides and causing rivers to change course, then striking the villages.
Twenty-three people who were previously reported missing have been rescued. Electricity in the affected areas has been restored, roads and bridges have resumed traffic, and network communication has been restored.

Heavy rain and winds wrecked campsites on the island, while in Venice, Italy, masonry was blown off the belltower of St Mark's Basilica. The storms follow weeks of heatwave and drought across much of the continent.
In Corsica, winds gusting up to 224 km/h (140mph) uprooted trees and damaged mobile homes.
Authorities there said a 13-year-old girl was killed by a falling tree on a campsite.
At least seven people, including a husband, wife and four children, are missing after a car heading to Hyderabad from Karachi got swept away near Kathore, on the M9 link road, in a flash flood, it was reported on Thursday.
According to Express News, the rescue team managed to retrieve the damaged vehicle, but the search for the family is ongoing. The vehicle was found at the bank of Malir River.
A citizen named Shehzad, a resident of Gulshan-e-Hadeed, alerted Rescue 15 about the vehicle.
The Memon Goth police station's Station House Officer (SHO) said that on receiving the information, rescue teams and police reached the location. However, due to the water level being too high, the rescue officials encountered difficulties in carrying out relief procedures.
