FLOODS
Floods hit Hérault in France today, on March 13th 2022.

Warnings are in place following heavy rains and high winds that have led to floods in the region.

A high amount of rainfall has led to the Orb river overflowing its banks, flooding local areas. Béziers has been particularly affected, as flood waters covered much of the town.

Evacuations have taken place as flood waters rise. Houses were flooded, with belongings destroyed.

Roads were closed as vehicles were covered by water. Traffic was stopped, with residents advised not to leave their homes unless necessary .

Malaysia - Deadly landslide in Kuala Lumpur after heavy rainfall

At least 4 people have died after heavy rainfall caused a landslide in a residential area on the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on 10 March 2022.

Part of a hillside crashed into homes and vehicles in Ampang Jaya in Hulu Langat District, eastern Selangor State, on the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur Federal Territory. Parts of Hulu Langat District recorded more than 120 mm of rain in 24 hours to 10 March 2022.

Disaster authorities reported at least 15 homes damaged or destroyed, along with around 10 vehicles. Search and rescue teams were called in after 5 people were reported missing. As of 11 March, the bodies of 4 victims had been found and one person escaped with minor injuries. Rescue teams were continuing to search the area with tracker dogs to ensure there are no other victims remaining.

Mozambique - 12 killed as Cyclone Gombe brings strong winds and torrential rain - 8 inches in 24 hours

Disaster authorities in Mozambique report that at least 12 people have died after Cyclone Gombe swept across the country bringing winds of 165 km/h and rain of over 200mm in 24 hours.

Cyclone Gombe made landfall as a Category 3 Tropical Cyclone on Friday, 11 March 2022 on the coast between Mossuril and Mogincual districts in Nampula Province.

The International Organization for Migration said as many as 115,336 individuals have been affected by the storm, mostly in Nampula (Angoche, Moma, Mogovolas, Mucuburi, Monapo, Ilha, Lalaua, Mossuril, Nacala Porto and Meconta) and Zambezia (Namacurra, Gile, Nicoadala, Maganja, Pebane, Molocue, Mocubela, Mopeia, Mocuba and lle).

Hundreds of homes damaged, communities isolated after floods in Cotopaxi, Ecuador

Flooding has caused severe damage in areas of Cotopaxi Province in Ecuador. Thousands of people are isolated after bridges were destroyed by overflowing rivers. Flooding has also caused damage to homes in Azuay Province, prompting families to evacuate.

Cotopaxi Province

Local media report as many as 8 bridges have been damaged or destroyed due to flooding in La Maná canton in Cotopaxi province. An estimated 15,000 inhabitants of Guayacán, Malqui, Guasaganda, Pucayacu, La Playita and Choaló are isolated as a result.

Flooding also caused widespread damage to homes in Pucayacu, one of the worst affected areas. Local authorities said the overflowing Quindigua River destroyed the Pucayacu bridge, but also damaged around 180 homes close to the river. Many of the families have moved to safer locations, although reports suggested some families are reluctant to evacuate. Damage along the riverbanks has left some of the house precariously close to the river and likely to collapse. Flooding has also damage water infrastructure, leaving many residents without drinking water supply.

At least 9 people have died in floods and landslides in Indonesia over the last few days, according to reports from local authorities and the United Nations (UN).

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said six people died in Serang City in the province of Banten on the island of Java after they were swept away or electrocuted.

Flooding began in Banten Province after days of heavy rainfall since the start of the month. Indonesia's meteorological agency BMKG reported 180.4 mm of rain fell in Serang in 24 hours to 01 March 2022.

The death toll from week-long floods battering Australia's east coast rose to 20 on Tuesday, after the bodies of a man and a woman were discovered in floodwaters in Sydney.

Police said it was "suspected" the pair are a missing mother and son whose car was abandoned in a stormwater canal.

Tens of thousands of Sydney residents have been told to evacuate their homes as severe storms and flash flooding inundated swathes of Australia's largest city Tuesday.

The national weather bureau warned of "a tough 48 hours ahead" for Sydney, with 60,000 people subject to evacuation orders and warnings across the affected areas, according to emergency services.

Communities in New South Wales (NSW), Australia, are facing evacuation orders after heavy rainfall of over 200 mm in 24 hours.

Areas of the state, in particular in the north, saw flooding from late February. On 28 February as many as 15,000 people evacuated their homes in Lismore after the Wilsons River reached record levels.

Over the last 24 hours, Sydney and surrounding areas received high levels of rainfall which in turn increased levels of already swollen rivers and reservoirs.

Australia's Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) in NSW said dozens of locations around Sydney and south east NSW saw 100 to 150 mm of rain. Mittagong in the Southern Highlands saw the highest total, recording 232 mm of rain in 24 hours to 08 March.

NSW Premier, Dominic Perrottet, said in a press conference on 08 March that there are currently 59 evacuation orders across the state, affecting a total of around 40,000 people. There are also 15 evacuation warnings affecting 20,000 people. There are 23 flood evacuation centres are currently in operation.

In the last 24 hours, the New South Wales State Emergency Service (SES) issued evacuation orders for areas including in the areas of Camden, Narrabeen and Mulgoa in Greater Sydney, and Sussex Inlet and St Georges Basin further south. Transport including road, train and ferry travel were all disrupted in Greater Sydney. The SES said it carried out 100 flood rescues and responded to 2,400 requests for assistance.

Premier Perrottet added that 2 people died in flood waters in Wentworthville early on 08 March, bringing the total number of recent flood fatalities in the state to seven.

Heavy rain caused flash flooding up to two meters high in several areas around Malaysia's Klang Valley, including in the capital Kuala Lumpur.

Hundreds of homes were flooded, with families needing to be rescued. Possessions were destroyed, and businesses forced to close.

Sewers overflowed as drain systems failed to deal with the volume of water. Debris filled the streets, as garbage was washed down roads.

Vehicles were left underwater, with travel impossible in many areas. Residents were advised not to leave their homes unless neccessary.

Electricity substations were closed due to the flooding, leading to power outages. Warnings are in place for further floods in the area.

Overflowing rivers in northern parts of Antioquia Department in Colombia have damaged homes, swamped roads and left thousands of people isolated.

Authorities said the Apartadó, Grande, Vijagual and Murindo rivers in the Urabá sub-region of Antioquia Department flooded after heavy rainfall over the last few days.

Governor of Antioquia, Aníbal Gaviria Correa, said 5 municipalities are in a state of emergency: Murindó, Apartadó, Turbo Chigorodó and Carepa. Colombia's Civil Defence reports that around 2,000 people are affected in Apartadó. One person died in Turbo Chigorodó. Local politician Omar Restrepo said as many as 3,000 people are isolated in Murindó after flooding along the Murindó river.

Heavy rain from 05 March 2022 caused severe flash flooding in northern parts of Hispaniola island in the Caribbean Sea. Damages were reported in Puerto Plata Province, Dominican Republic, and Nord Department, Haiti, where 2 fatalities were reported.

Drivers and passengers dramatically escaped vehicles that were swept away by raging flood waters in in Puerto Plata Province, Dominican Republic. Flooding also caused material damages and at 68 homes were inundated, mostly in Sosúa and Maimón. Over 115 mm of rain fell in the city of Puerto Plata in 24 hours to 06 march 2022.

Civil Defence in Dominican Republic also reported flood damage in the Duarte neighbourhood of Santo Domingo Oeste after the Guajimía canal broke its banks.

As of 06 March, warnings for heavy rain and floods were still in place for Puerto Plata, La Vega and María Trinidad Sánchez Provinces.

Heavy rain caused flash floods, with areas of the city left underwater. Emergency services worked to free residents who were trapped by the water.

Rivers overflowed, flooding houses with fish swimming through some houses. Possessions were destroyed, and businesses closed due to the flood waters.

Cars were left underwater as streets filled with water. In some areas, boats were used to travel between buildings. Residents were advised to remain in their homes where safe to do so.

Warnings remain in place for further flooding, along with fears of landslides as the land becomes saturated.
