Faroe Islanders have turned the sea red during their annual killing of a herd of innocent pilot whales.

Every year, innocent whales are forced to swim towards the shores of the Danish islands during their migration.

But when local fishermen catch a glimpse of them, the mammals slow down before locals get in their power boats and dinghies to close in on the large school of whales.

A group spending the day on the water got a closer encounter with West Virginia's great outdoors than they would have liked.

The Division of Natural Resources reports a group of 20 to 25 people were celebrating Mother's Day back in May with a float trip on Monongalia County's Dunkard Creek. At some point, the party encountered a river otter winch inadvertently climbed into one of the canoes and bit a man, then ended up biting another in one of the other boats in the group.

The victims went to the emergency room for treatment and took precautionary rabies shots.

Alaska has been left shocked by two fatal maulings by wild black bears in the space of just two days.

On Monday, officials with an underground gold mine reported a contract employee hired to take geological samples was killed and another injured in a black bear attack. That attack took place about 300 miles northeast of Anchorage.

The names of the victims have not been released. Alaska State Troopers and federal mine officials were investigating the mauling at Pogo Mine.

Officials told CBS affiliate KTVA that the contractors were working several miles from the main mine camp when they were attacked.

"Right now we have more questions than answers. Everyone on site is concerned for those involved," Pogo Mine general manager Chris Kennedy said, according to KTVA. "Our condolences have been shared with our contractor and our hearts go out to the individuals, their colleagues, and their families."

Imperiled North America Atlantic salmon decline worsens; returning fish decline by 27% in a year

Fewer of North America's Atlantic salmon are making it back to rivers to spawn, which bodes poorly for the future of the imperiled fish, an international conservation group says.

Atlantic salmon were once abundant in the rivers of New England and Atlantic Canada, but are now endangered or have disappeared in parts of both areas. The salmon are born in rivers, swim to the Atlantic and return to their natal river to spawn.

The New Brunswick, Canada-based Atlantic Salmon Federation released a report this month that says total estimated returns of the fish to North America in 2016 was a little more than a half million salmon. That is a 27 percent decrease from the previous year.

Campers taking part in the Brad Sneeden Marine Science Camp got a rare opportunity to see marine science in action Monday, when a dead beached whale was discovered at Fort Macon State Park.

A visitor at Fort Macon reported the beached whale to park rangers, who informed the Marine Mammal Stranding Network.

Dr. Vicky Thayer, coordinator for the national network's state branch, responded with a response team to the call, going out to Fort Macon with staff from the N.C. Division of Marine Fisheries, the N.C. State University Center for Marine Sciences and Technology in Morehead City, the Duke University Marine Lab in Beaufort, UNC Wilmington and the N.C. Maritime Museum, also in Beaufort.

Dr. Thayer had been scheduled to speak to the 33 students in the science camp, when she got the call about the beached whale. The campers were scheduled to attend a necropsy at one of the local marine labs, but instead they got to see Dr. Thayer and her team in action.

A goat branded "evil" by villagers after it was born with no eyes and 'human-like lips' will be hand-reared by a kind hearted farmer.

The farmer, known as V Chandra, admitted he was shocked when he saw the newborn animal for the first time but his wife told him to "save" the goat.

He has remained determined to keep the bizarre looking animal, despite locals advising him to let it die.

The goat was born without eyes due to a rare genetic condition which stops them developing.

The couple in Balussery, Kerala in India are now hand-rearing the goat which cannot feed off its mother.

A shark has attacked a swimmer off the coast of one of the most popular beaches in Ibiza.

The victim was treated for a two-inch gash to his hand after being bitten at Playa d'en Bossa - home to famous clubs like Ushaia and a Brit tourist favourite - yesterday afternoon.

Other swimmers fled the water following the attack, although the beach was not closed to swimmers.

First aiders spent about an hour searching the waters while the local authorities confirmed that a blue shark or a large fish was behind the attack.

The 82-year-old Spanish victim was discharged from Can Misses Hospital near Ibiza town around 7.30pm yesterday, about four hours after he had been admitted.

A 10-year-old girl is in very critical condition after being attacked by a dog on Detroit's east side, police said.

The incident happened around 1:15 p.m. Saturday in the 10700 block of Beaconsfield Street off Whittier Avenue.

Police said the girl was playing in a backyard when a dog exited the house and attacked her. The pit bull somehow managed to get out of a second-floor gated room and into the backyard, where the girl and her aunt were visiting.

"The occupants knew the dog was a vicious animal, so when strangers are around they secure the dog. But in this instance, the dog left the upstairs, came down, the gated door was ajar, the dog left and immediately began attacking this child," Chief James Craig said.
