Volunteers deliver food and water to stranded Penampang residents after landslides and heavy rain cut off roads.
Nearly a quarter of a million people were left without electricity over the weekend in Malaysia's Sabah state after torrential rain triggered landslides that killed at least one person and took out a transmission tower that cut power across a large area.

Footage shared widely on social media showed the tower leaning precariously after it was hit by a landslide in the district of Penampang on the state's west coast on Saturday evening.

The incident cut power supply to six districts in Sabah's east coast, including the town of Sandakan, over 300km (186 miles) away.

State power company Sabah Electricity said power had been gradually restored in some parts of the affected areas on Sunday, but other parts of the state on Malaysia in northern Borneo remained without energy on Monday.

Malaysia has been struggling to deal with extreme weather events in recent years, as the climate crisis worsens droughts and rains, decimating crops and damaging homes and public infrastructure.

Update September 16

News.az reports:
At least 13 people, among them seven children, have lost their lives in a series of landslides across Sabah, Malaysia, as relentless heavy rains lash the state's western coast.

The devastating storms are the deadliest to strike the region in nearly three decades, leaving communities reeling and emergency services struggling to respond, News.Az reports, citing foreign media.

Nearly 90 incidents of landslides, flash flooding and road collapses have been reported over the past week, according to state authorities, as residents brace for worse to come after the Malaysian Meteorological Department issued a fresh storm warning on Tuesday.

The death toll is the highest from a single weather event in Sabah since the 1996 floods that killed over 200 people and swept away dozens of houses along the riverbanks in the state's Keningau district, when tropical storm Greg struck.

Arkansas bear attack may be the state's first since before the Civil War - Elderly man subsequently dies (UPDATE)

mmmmmmmmmm
On Wednesday afternoon, a black bear attacked a man in Franklin County. The victim, a 72-year-old named Vernon Patton, is in stable condition at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, according to Keith Stephens, the chief of communications for the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission.

Patton was reportedly working outside in the Mulberry Mountain area when the incident occurred. The bear was "in the process of attacking him" when Patton's son showed up to check on him and started throwing rocks at it, Stephens said.

"It actually kind of charged at [Patton's son] one time" before running away, Stephens said.

By the time Game and Fish officers arrived at the scene, Patton had been airlifted to Washington Regional Medical Center in Fayetteville, where he underwent surgery before being relocated to UAMS, Stephens said.

"It was a pretty severe attack," Stephens said. "It attacked him on his face, his arms, his upper body."

The bear, which Stephens identified as a "yearling male" weighing "about 70 pounds," remained close by.

Earth is currently undergoing multiple solar storms that potentially have the capability to interrupt power grids, satellite communications, and internet connectivity. These storms happen when bursts of plasma emerge from the Sun's outer layer, temporarily disturbing the planet's magnetic field. According to Daily Mail, the recent geomagnetic activity started with a G3 storm late Sunday evening, followed by a G2 event on Monday. While G1 and G2 storms generally produce minor disturbances, G3 storms are stronger and can trigger significant fluctuations in power systems, temporary radio outages, and intermittent satellite interruptions.

Impacts on Technology and Infrastructure

One of the most major impacts has been found with Starlink satellites, the internet service operated by Elon Musk. The company reported over 50,000 complaints from subscribers across different states such as California, Missouri, and New York. The largest solar burst on Sunday caused a total internet outage impacting almost 40 percent of Starlink users, as cited by Daily Mail.

Rare September tornado outbreak slams North Dakota

mmmmmmm
There were more tornado reports yesterday in North Dakota than there have been in Septembers over the last 30 years.

More tornadoes touched down in North Dakota on Sunday than the state had seen in any September over the past three decades, combined. The outbreak began near Mobridge, South Dakota, where storms flipped an SUV towing a trailer and knocked down power lines. From there, the system tracked north into North Dakota, passing east of Bismarck and Minot, with many of the twisters documented by storm chasers.

A total of 20 tornado reports were received by NOAA's Storm Prediction Center in the Dakotas, with 18 in North Dakota. Since 1995, only 15 tornadoes had been reported in the month of September in the state, which typically has the most tornadoes in June.

Rescuers have recovered two bodies after a landslide buried six people near a girder bridge at Kilometer 31 in the remote village of Mahayahay, San Luis town on Sunday evening, September 14.

Barangay chairperson Sergio Manlomate told radio reporter Ranelo "Boy" Abad of government-run DXGP 89.7 FM that the landslide was triggered after a driver of a "Saddam" truck tried to pull out a fallen tree blocking the road to the bridge, inadvertently loosening massive rocks and mud from the mountainside.

A "Saddam" truck is a colloquial term for an old 6 x 6 military truck used to carry workers of logging companies that operated in the 1980s in the hinterlands of San Luis.

A joint retrieval team composed of local police, Army soldiers, and personnel from the Municipal isaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) recovered the remains of a boy identified as John Paul Abunda, and Junard Gonzales, a truck driver.
