3 dead after Mount Dukono volcano erupts on Indonesian island - ash column 6 miles high

Three people hiking on Indonesia's Mount Dukono have died after the volcano erupted on Friday morning.

Videos and pictures of the eruption show the volcano, located on North Maluku island, spewing a column of ash stretching 10km (six miles) into the sky.

The three victims were part of a group of 20 Singaporeans and Indonesians hiking on the mountain despite restrictions. The rest of the group was eventually located by rescuers and evacuated from the mountain.

The volcano has erupted more than 200 times since last March. Officials had previously issued warnings against climbing the mountain due to safety concerns.

The latest eruption took place at 07:41 local time (22:41 GMT Thursday), when there were several people on the mountain on early morning hikes.

As many as 33 sheep and goats were killed in a lightning strike at Kumarapalayam near Vellianai on Friday.

The livestock belonged to Krishnasamy.

The sheep and goats were sheltered in a shed when lightning struck.

The dead livestock is valued at around ₹4 lakh.

On information, the veterinarians of the Department of Animal Husbandry rushed to the spot and conducted enquiries.

A late-season spring snowstorm caused major travel disruptions along Colorado's I-70 mountain corridor Wednesday morning, May 6, leading to a multi-hour closure near Vail Pass as snow totals as deep as 30″ were reported in mountain areas across the state. According to reporting from The Denver Post, eastbound lanes were shut down for more than two hours after two semitrailers jackknifed near milepost 185. The closure, which stretched from East Vail at Exit 180 to the summit of Vail Pass at Exit 190, was officially lifted by 10:30 a.m. after state transportation officials cleared the scene and reopened the roadway.

Meteorologists sound the alarm: El Nino plume racing across Pacific like a "freight train"

El Niño to return in 2026, strengthening in the second half of the year and lasting through the 2026/2027 season.
Meteorologists on X are once again warning about a powerful El Niño, pointing to a new plume of warm subsurface water moving across the Pacific "like a freight train." The latest water temperature data suggest that El Niño later this year could rank among the strongest on record, with potentially significant implications for the Lower 48.

"Updated El Niño forecast for this summer/autumn is 'off the charts' EXTREME with 'boiling red' map colors along Equatorial central and eastern Pacific Ocean," meteorologist Ryan Maue wrote on X. He said this is "code red the Earth's climate system going into Summer 2026," which only means "suppressed Atlantic hurricane activity."

Meteorologist Ben Noll said, "A brand new El Niño plume from ECMWF reaches +3˚C in most scenarios by November, which would put this event among the strongest on record."

A truck driver literally started his morning with a sinking feeling in downtown Simcoe on Tuesday.

A Norfolk Disposal waste collection truck ended up in a sinkhole in a parking lot behind a business at Peel Street and Norfolk Street S. on Tuesday morning.

"Often times when you talk about traffic related incidents they are the result of choices that are made by a driver behind the wheel, but in this case it's just in the wrong place at the wrong time," Norfolk OPP Const. Andrew Gamble said in a social media post.

The incident led to the closure of Norfolk St. S between Peel and Victoria streets for several hours while a crane was brought in to lift the vehicle from the hole.

The incident also led to numerous posts being made to social media, among them were videos from Henry Knelsen, operator of Handy Henry's located across the street from the sinkhole.

A brightly colored cloud was filmed over Bogor, Indonesia, this week, sparking conversations on social media as to its cause. Somewhat rare, the atmospheric phenomenon that causes these rainbow colors is called cloud iridescence.

Thin clouds with water droplets that are uniform in size are the most likely place to see iridescence, although it requires the cloud to be in a specific place and the sun to be at a certain angle. As the cloud evolves, the colors change and can quickly disappear.

In this case, the pileus cap, a lenticular cloud on top of a thunderstorm's cumulonimbus cloud, provided the consistent droplets required. Iridescence occurs when light diffracts through the water droplets.

A Dutch family came across a special sight when they went for a walk on the beach in Løkken, North Jutland, last week.

A two-meter-long fish lay in the sand, and it turned out to be a so-called herring king.

This is only the fourth time that a herring king has been recorded in Denmark, explains Kristina Ydesen, chief biologist at Nordsøen Oceanarium.

- It's a really exciting and unusual find. We don't know much about the species, and therefore every find is an incredibly valuable contribution to science.

- Therefore, the herring king is now being sent for further investigation, and we look forward to seeing what answers it gives us, says Kristina Ydesen in a press release.

The herring king is a long and narrow fish that lives in tropical and temperate areas in all seas, and it is therefore extremely rare in Danish waters.
