More than 200 people died and thousands were displaced as an unusually heavy monsoon season brought flooding and landslides leaving devastation across India, Nepal, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. Torrential rains also triggered unprecedented floods and landslides in southeast China, displacing 77,000 people and affecting more than 20 million.

North America had its share of heavy rain too, leaving Washington and Pittsburgh swamped, and engulfing New Orleans turning streets into rivers that swept away dozens of cars and forced many to paddle their way in kayaks.

The heat wave that affected some parts of Europe, was overshadowed by violent storms, flash-flooding and mudslides throughout the region; including Spain, Romania, France, and Austria - but this was just a day in the park for Italy. Severe weather in the country brought apocalyptic hailstorms, flash floods that swept away cars like toys, and winds so fierce they uprooted large trees leaving behind all sorts of devastation.

Several intense earthquakes took thousands by surprise around the world this month, a 5.7 Mag in Iran, 6.6 Mag in Western Australia, 7.3 Mag in eastern Indonesia, a 5.3 Mag in the capital of Greece... but the most significant ones took place in southern California; a 6.3 Mag, considered the most intense in decades, only to be eclipsed by a 7.1 Mag earthquake the following day and raising fears of 'the big one'.

57 people dead, 18,000 hospitalized due to Japan's unrelenting heatwave

Fifty-seven people died due to heat-related medical issues in Japan over the week starting July 29, the government said Tuesday, with the number of those taken to hospitals more than tripling from the previous week's 5,664 to 18,347.

The weekly figure of those sent to hospitals was the second highest since tallies began in 2008, according to the Fire and Disaster Management Agency.

Of the 18,347 people, 729 had severe symptoms requiring more than three weeks of treatment as an inpatient, while 6,548 had less serious issues needing shorter stays. Those aged 65 and older accounted for 54.3 percent of the total.

Upward lightning shooting from the top of a mountain has been captured on camera by an amateur photographer.

Alyssa Barrundia, a missionary living in Guatemala, captured the spectacle at Volcan de Agua in the south of the Central American country on Friday.

Ms Barrundia said it was the second time in the past few weeks the striking spectacle had occurred at the volcano, but the first time she had witnessed it personally.

"It was quite spectacular," she told PA.

Hailstones up to 4 inches in diameter battered Minnesota's Carver, Hennepin, and Wright counties, west of Minneapolis, on the afternoon of Monday, August 5, damaging vehicles and other property, according to people in the area.

The National Weather Service reported that "tennis ball size" hail had fallen in Watertown, Carver County, while hail four inches in diameter was reported in the Wright County town of Delano, about five miles northeast of Watertown.

This footage shows a hailstorm in Watertown. The person who shared it also posted images of a car windshield cracked in multiple places following the storm.

A 32-year-old Stark County man was killed by a lightning strike over the weekend, according to the Stark County Sheriff's Office.

Lt. Eldon Mehrer says Kyle Brierley from Dickinson was found unresponsive Sunday behind his truck in Richardton.

Deputies say the victim was in the area volunteering near a recreational center.

The medical examiners preliminary report confirmed the cause of death, according to Mehrer.

Mehrer says this is something they don't see often.

One sheep reportedly jumped off a 20-meter high cliff and was followed by the others in the herd, which was grazing in the Topyıldız village of Van's Gürpınar district.

The sheep that triggered the bizarre incident was reportedly trying to jump from one cliff to another in the early hours of June 12 in the Arebi-Krom plateau near the Yaprakli hamlet.

Comment: This is also eerily similar to an incident in France a few years ago where 200 sheep died from jumping off a cliff. While a bear was blamed for chasing the sheep, the incident could have been caused by something altogether different. As the SOTT editor commented:
Although a bear attack can't be ruled out, we can suspect that the incident was created by a "weather event" or something that created a high impact explosion, like a sonic boom or lightning strike. Sheep have acute hearing and are prone to "instantly scatter" away from heavy percussion and the source of the vibration. Many of the sheep were found to have dispersed over the mountains. It's dubious that a bear attack would create that type of a reaction.

After an otherwise sunny afternoon in the town of Emerald Isle just off the coast of North Carolina, Joshua Lanier spotted an ominous cylindrical mass swirling just above the water's surface.

Lanier caught it on camera from his beach house shortly after 6 p.m. on Friday and posted it to Twitter, where upwards of 3,000 people have since watched the video.

The tornado-like vortex he filmed is what's known as a waterspout.

A powerful magnitude 7 earthquake struck off Indonesia's island of Sumatra on Friday, prompting authorities to issue a tsunami warning and to order people to evacuate their homes.

The quake hit about 227 km (141 miles) from the city of Teluk Betung on the island at a depth of 59 km (37 miles). Indonesian authorities have warned that the tsunami could reach as high as three meters (10 feet).

"There are some areas at risk of a serious threat of a tsunami that could be as high as three metres," said agency official Rahmat Triyono, as cited by the AFP. "We're still waiting for reports about damage from the quake."

The Indonesian geophysics agency quickly issued a tsunami warning and the country's Disaster Mitigation Agency said that residents on the Banten coast of Java island should "immediately evacuate to higher ground".

Comment: Update: Reliefweb on the 5th of August reports:
According to the National Agency for Disaster Management (BNPB), following the 6.9 M earthquake last week, 6 are dead, 4 injured, and over 2,100 displaced, mostly in Pandeglang (Banten Province) and Bandar Lampung (Lampung Province). In both provinces, BNPB report 600 houses or buildings destroyed or damaged.

No emergency response was declared. Local governments supported by the provincial and national governments provided basic relief assistance.

An earthquake of magnitude 6.1 struck northwest of the South Pacific island nation of Tonga, the United States Geological Survey said on Monday.

There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties from the quake, which the agency said hit at a depth of 49 km (30 miles), about 47 km (29 miles) northwest of the town of Neiafu.
