Tropical storm Narda left a trail of damage along Mexico's Pacific coast as it moved northward during the past seven days, hitting the states of Oaxaca and Guerrero particularly hard.

The storm claimed the lives of two people in Oaxaca: a 23-year-old man and a 17-year-old boy who were swept away by floodwaters while trying to cross rivers in the municipalities of San Pedro Mixtepec and San Jerónimo Coatlán respectively.

About 300 homes and at least 11 schools were damaged in the southern state as was the hospital in Tutupec, a municipality halfway between Puerto Escondido and Pinotepa Nacional.

There is a whole lotta shaking going on in America right now, and many people are concerned about what that could potentially mean. Could it be possible that the U.S. is entering a more seismically active time? This week alone, we have seen earthquake swarms in Texas, Oklahoma, San Francisco and the New Madrid fault zone. Of course earthquakes happen every day, but to see so many earthquake swarms happen in such diverse places within such a compressed period of time is definitely unusual. And what makes this even more unusual is the fact that Rosh Hashanah just ended. In fact, the earthquake swarm that we just witnessed in Texas started on Rosh Hashanah with a magnitude 4.0 quake near the town of "Snyder"...
In just over 12 hours, Texas experienced not one earthquake, but four, experts say.

Three quakes were centered near the town of Snyder — just south of the Texas panhandle — with a fourth centered near the Fort Worth area, according to the United States Geological Survey. The first and strongest of the cluster hit just after 4:45 p.m. Monday about 12 miles north of Snyder and measured magnitude 4.0.
That was the strongest earthquake in Texas so far this year, and it was followed by a magnitude 3.8 earthquake near Snyder, a magnitude 3.2 earthquake just south of Fort Worth, and a magnitude 2.5 earthquake near Snyder.

A Winnipeg man says he is lucky to be alive after suffering severe bites from a bear that attacked him three times near his cottage in northwestern Ontario.

Dave Schwab, who is 69, says he was finishing his walk near Kenora last Thursday when he spotted a black bear about 100 metres ahead of him in some bushes.

Schwab, an experienced hiker, says he made noise and the bear seemed to walk away, but it didn't leave the area and started following him before it attacked and bit his thigh and arm.

A Utah woman was attacked by a bison in the same park where her date had also been gored three months ago.

Kayleigh Davis, 22, was taking a sunset hike Friday on a trail at Antelope Island State Park when she came face-to-face with the soon-to-be rambunctious bovine.

She stepped off the path to steer clear of the animal when it suddenly charged, flipping her 15 feet in the air.

"I go around the bison, like off the trail away from him, and there's actually four bikers coming down the trail and I think they had spooked him," Davis told NBC affiliate KSL from her hospital room Monday. "That's when he flipped me up in the air."

The eruption Monday of Poás Volcano in Costa Rica has prompted officials to temporarily close the popular tourist attraction because of a "high probability" of more eruptions.

The dawn eruption, captured on video by the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica (OVSICORI), sent a column of ash more than a mile above the 8,885-foot volcano.

Poás Volcano National Park, located 29 miles northwest of the Costa Rican capital of San Jose, remained closed Tuesday and a reopening date had not been announced at the time of this post.

Papua New Guinea's volatile Ulawun volcano erupted early on Tuesday, sending a column of red lava shooting up into the sky and forcing the evacuation of recently returned residents.

Mount Ulawun, situated on the remote Bismarck Archipelago chain, displaced between 7 000 and 13 000 people from their homes when it last erupted in June.

Seismic activity started at midday on Monday before the volcano erupted at about 04:30 on Tuesday, according to Rabaul Volcano Observatory assistant director Ima Itikarai.

"It was noiseless and in the dark just before dawn; the eruption was visible (with) a distinct shard (of) red incandescent glow shooting up less than 100m from the base," he told AFP.

A 3-year-old boy was killed Tuesday morning after being attacked by two family dogs at a home in Louisville's Newburg neighborhood, police say.

Officers responded to the 4800 block of Brenda Drive just after 9 a.m. Tuesday, according to Louisville Metro Police spokesman Dwight Mitchell.

The 3-year-old boy suffered fatal injuries in the attack, Mitchell said.

According to 911 audio, the child had reportedly fallen out of a window into his family's yard, where the family's two Rottweilers attacked the child.

The dogs were taken away by Louisville Metro Animal Services, Mitchell said. A spokesperson for the animal services agency confirmed the department had been on the scene and said animals involved in incidents such as this one are placed in quarantine.

Torrential rains have swept across the UK bringing floods, closing roads and railways, and leading to some places being evacuated.

Dozens of flood warnings had been issued and some areas in the Midlands, Wales and southern England were hit by a week's rain in just an hour.

On the Isle of Man, a major incident was declared as floodwaters trapped people in their homes.

Further heavy rain and high winds are expected on Thursday.

The Environment Agency issued dozens of flood warnings and alerts across England, while the Met Office issued a yellow warning for heavy rain that could cause power cuts, road closures and flooding.

The warning is in place until 20:00 BST across large parts of central and southern England, and Wales.

In Cornwall, floods caused by a coastal surge meant people were told to leave caravans and seaside properties in the morning and not to return until it is safe to do so.
