California, US: Mysterious Floor Shaking at Santa Cruz County Jail

Wednesday afternoon the floor at the Santa Cruz County jail started bulging and tiles started to pop off, said Deputy April Skalland.

The front lobby of the jail was evacuated and the prisoners were placed on lockdown as the mystery was investigated. According to Deputy Skalland, neither a gas leak nor a water leak caused the floor tiles to start moving.

At this time it is still unknown what caused the floor to start moving. According to the United States Geological Survey no earthquakes were recorded during this time.

From the pictures, it's obvious that the jail lobby walls compressed by about an inch, forcing the rigid floor tiles together and so buckling the floor surface. The tiles compressed in both axis and buckled in both.

Some modern jails (like this one in Santa Cruz, apparently) have thin exterior walls around some areas like lobbies and offices, while the secure areas with massive concrete walls, steel doors and so on are at least partly inside exterior structures, which aren't quite as rigid.

It looks like what happened here might have been caused by a minor land slip that moved two exterior walls inwards just a little, it appears.

What is under the floor ?

There might be a sinkhole developing just under and the levels of the walls and the floor are changing therefore buckling the floor tiles which don't have space in between to adjust to the emerging forces.

rock folding or thrust pressure. The whole area is in sliding contact with the continental plate, causing mountain building. The place is definately warped.

Was that DUE to the direction in which we are flipping (Siberia)? Also, you mentioned that it is happening at an faster rate. What will happen when we get there?
