Ah they're just a bunch of old baby boomers who've read too many sword n' sorcery novels. As no one actually knows too much about what a druid was, or did, the whole bit with the white robes is somewhat akin to balancing a little white hat on the side of your head and announcing to the world that you're Popeye.
such an intrinsic body of folk and a short piece devoted to an extraordinary historical body...almost like "well there's not much you can say about that, is there matey?"
Imagine - these Druids...been there on & oft for centuries wondering what to do in the face of the commercial religions when Dave, one of the Druids says "Lets get recogniton officially and get tax concessions" to which all the others, a few more Daves and Brians and Teds and Marys and Pauls plus a mixed bag of other well known and rarer names who were all standing around like spare pricks at a wedding all said "yep" and thats how it happened - didnt it!
You know sort of overnight at a boring friday night get together where it was pissin with rain outside and everyones white robes were smelley from acid rain....and the mead was a little dull instead of its normally rich heartedness, tending to give its "suppahs" (those that sup) a more institutional atmosphere rather than party spirit (intriguing word that - spirit)...hohum, at last Druids can expect to get tax concessions and maybe draw a few members more to the "ring of stones do" and other events they put on to create an atmosphere and of course enjoy nature, like many of us.
No...Im not a Druid, pagan yes but not a Druid.
I think it was the word "mainstream" in the piece title that blew me away....!
good for the druids. take back your holiday!! some people may be aware of the co-opting of the pagan 'sun is born' on Dec 25 by Xtians 'Son is born' - a classic example of one religion stealing market share from another, just like Macy's having a sale on the same announced day as Nordstrom.
fewer people may be aware that the Baltic/Latvian god JANIS [Link], which preceded the CE was celebrated on the midsummer. and jaanipaev [Link] was celebrated in Estonia at least 300 years BCE.
funny thing - when Romans contacted these groups , they substituted their own invention of a similar sounding St John to, once again, get market share . St John was even first written about by Tacitus, over two full generations after all the action was supposed to have occured. this happened when trade first commenced between the area (mostly for a camphor like herb)
take back your market share, go Druids
