Briefly stated, the Gell-Mann Amnesia effect is as follows. You open the newspaper to an article on some subject you know well... You read the article and see the journalist has absolutely no understanding of either the facts or the issues. Often, the article is so wrong it actually presents the story backward—reversing cause and effect...
In any case, you read with exasperation or amusement the multiple errors in a story, and then turn the page to national or international affairs, and read as if the rest of the newspaper was somehow more accurate about Palestine than the baloney you just read. You turn the page, and forget what you know.

The families are held hostage by limited food and zero opportunities to leave. The UN obviously supports this as it has many times ignored pleas to allow the families to leave to resettle and rebuilt their lives and homes.
Decades ago I did a college paper on the increasing civilian fatalities from our world wars and we now have come full circle back to the historical use of people being rounded up and used to fight pointless battles.
Guess what? with the growth of the military ornamentation and enlistment, there was less will to throw away the established and therefore powerful group's lives. There developed the 'flower' wars and even the battles biblically reputed to have been settled between a strongman from each opposing forces. The remote murders by drones is emblematic of our times where public lives are throw aways and hidden from public revelation.
One wonders if public pressure actually drove the military choice of individual confrontation instead of public slaughter. Wasn't the Olympics a choice to identify successes without pointless slaughter?
