Mystery surrounds a loud explosion that shook Moranbah homes overnight.

Just before 11pm, numerous residents reported hearing a huge 'bang' that seemingly shook their homes.

A Queensland Police media spokeswoman confirmed police were alerted to a potential explosion around 10.49pm.

"We received a call from someone saying they had heard an enormous bang that sounds like an explosion," the QPS spokeswoman said.

"Police did conduct patrols but there is no further information."

Moranbah local police could not provide any further information and Queensland Fire and Emergency Services were not alerted to the incident.

With the 'what was that huge bang' question still standing, speculation is rife amongst members of the Moranbah community.

One resident suggested it could have been an air force fly over breaking the sound barrier while another said it could have been an explosion at the quarry.

Another resident questioned whether it was a transformer blowing up but a search of the Ergon Energy website uncovered no evidence to support this theory.

Residents say the bang was too loud and strong to be a gun shot.

The mystery deepens.

More to come.
