The death of a Jacksonville woman was ruled by the National Weather Service as directly attributable to lightning after a bolt struck a tree that fell on her car.

Barbara M. Pearson, 56, was killed last month when the tree fell on her car. According to Jacksonville.com, her car rolled across a road and into a ditch where other drivers found her. She died five days after the Aug. 20 accident.

The National Weather Service sent out a notice this morning saying that although the Pearson was not directly struck by lightning, her death was a direct result of a lightning strike.

Florida leads the country this year for lightning-related deaths with five. Those include people killed in Bonita Springs, Largo, Miami and Port Orange.

Alabama has had four people killed by lightning.

Nationally, 25 people have been killed by lightning this year. One fewer than the 26 recorded in 2014.
