If you have a balcony, as many apartment blocks do, it can be closed against winter conditions with some heavy plastic and basic hardware supplies. With a balcony it also becomes possible to use soil. In combination with the vertical farm systems demonstrated in the video, significant yields become realistic. (Sunlight allowing, of course). I really like the idea of LED growlights. LEDs burn very small amounts of electricity; you can literally run an LED flashlight for more than a month on single set of batteries. I'd never heard of using LEDs for indoor farming before. That's pretty cool!

A farmer friend of mine explained that a year's supply of potatoes for a large family could be grown in a surprisingly small area of land. It wouldn't be a window farm, but it was perhaps the footprint of a very small house. I was taken aback. It's a lot of fun to talk shop with a food grower who is excited about it.

The fact of the matter is that economic conditions are leaving many people without enough to eat. Hunger in the U.S. is increasing, and I don't think it's likely that our current food distribution systems can be counted upon to rectify the situation.

There's nothing wrong at all with growing your own food. It's empowering in several ways; it puts the control of nutrition and health into the hands of the people.

Calling self-empowerment "paranoia" is a little peculiar.

Woodsman: I remember an item on television, where they experimented, on a large scale and with great success, with (different colors of) LEDs. So in darker spaces or even in closets, you could setup a small table for growing veggies with LEDs above. A quick search found the following link: _[Link]
