A Strange noise is continuing to plague residents of a Mytholmroyd estate - and the cause is no clearer.

The Courier revealed earlier this month the misery of two women living on the Nest estate. They can hear a humming noise, which leaves them with headaches, insomnia and sickness.

Now other people say they can hear the hum. Liberal Democrat councillor Christine Bampton-Smith, who represents the Luddenden Foot ward, said she had been contacted by people from Oven-den, Pellon, King Cross and Todmorden.

They can all hear the strange vibrating noise.

Councillor Bampton-Smith said: "Some of these people said they felt desperate until they read the article because they thought they were alone and nobody would believe them.

"They say they can't cope for much longer. It is a huge mystery that is causing a lot of misery."

Environmental health officers have tested the area with a device that picks up low or high frequencies but were unable to find anything.

The next step will be to investigate infra-sound micro-wave frequencies and water flows in nearby fields.

Councillor Bampton-Smith said she would also approach universities to see if they had any expertise that could solve the mystery.

Calder Valley MP Chris McCafferty said she would speak to experts in the House of Commons library to see if they had any knowledge of the problem in other parts of the country.

"Clearly there are people who are being disturbed by the noise nuisance. It is a serious issue for them and we must try to get to the bottom of it, for their health and quality of life," she said.

The noise has been affecting people since October.
