Belief in UFOs is a faith issue for Territorians, the results of an exclusive Northern Territory News poll show.

Most of those surveyed believed in UFOs - but that doesn't mean they've seen one.

The telephone survey revealed 60 per cent of Territorians surveyed believe UFOs exist, but only 16 per cent have seen one.

Not even "evidence" of alien contact with Earth would convince half the respondents.

Stonehenge, the Egyptian pyramids, crop circles and ice on Mars were cited by 42 per cent of respondents as proof of extra-terrestrial contact.

But 24 per cent believed aliens had visited Earth, and 36 per cent that they may have.

Those who believed were optimistic, expecting alien life to be friendly if it existed.

In fact, 32 per cent believed aliens would buck the Hollywood stereotype of power-wielding tyrants bent on dominating the galaxy.

Meanwhile, 50 per cent reserved their judgement of aliens' disposition towards humans.

While most of those surveyed were sceptical about alien life in our solar system and the Milky Way, most were convinced there was life in the rest of the universe.

Eighteen per cent said there was definitely alien life in our solar system, and 24 per cent said there was definitely alien life in the Milky Way.

Conspiracy theorists abounded, with 30 per cent saying the government was "definitely" concealing evidence of UFOs, and 26 per cent saying they might be.

Twenty-six per cent were also convinced alien life had been proved, but not officially announced.

But scepticism kicked in when it came to alien abductions and aliens living on Earth - more than half of respondents said aliens were probably or definitely not living among us, and only 10 per cent believed reports of people being abducted by aliens.

Fifty Territorians were surveyed for the poll over two weeks.
