Denbigh Castle is not the only haunted hotspot in Denbighshire.
The Free Press decided to delve into the mystery of hauntings of Denbighshire's 10 most haunted places , and found things do go bump in the night...

Over the years, a variety of public figures have stayed at the Hand Hotel in Llangollen.

But, the most famous guests seem to be the spirits.

According to ghost hunters, many of the rooms are haunted, one of which, they say, is visited by the spirit of a lady who died in childbirth.

In addition, a figure has been seen sitting at an organ in the hotel.

Guests have often had the feeling that someone is following them only to turn around and find no one there.

During a paranormal investigation-Spirit Quest UK, experienced voices, cold spots, someone had their hair pulled, and a person looking into a mirror saw another face staring back.

But perhaps the most remarkable piece of evidence collected has only just come to light.

Kathleen Hughes who is a senior investigator with Spirit Quest, said: "We were looking at footage of the last investigation at The Hand and during spirit communication using a glass, we suddenly noticed that one of the arms holding the glass seems to be transparent in the sense that you can see the table through it."

The Llindir Inn, Henllan is said to be haunted by a spirit named Sylvia, who dates back 300 years to when the inn was owned by a sea captain.

During the months her husband was at sea, Sylvia would regularly forget her vows, and would sport in the marriage bed with many local young men.

One fateful winter night, Sylvia was caught out by her husband, who returned home early from sea.

After catching his wife in the 'act', enraged beyond reason, the husband stabbed his wife's lover through the heart and strangled his wife to death.

Sylvia's spirit, dressed in a long gown of blue, is said to have haunted the Llindir Inn ever since.

"Even in death, it seems Sylvia did not give up her amorous ways," said Richard Treble, landlord of the Llindir Inn.

"It was said that if any man slept alone in the room where Sylvia died, her ghost would creep into bed with him."

A group of ghost hunters conducted a vigil and recorded a number of supernatural encounters during a trip to Bodidris Hall, Llandegla.

They found spirits haunt the building from the 1400s, 1500s and 1800s - including a monk, a soldier, a boy, a well-dressed woman and a dog - though not all of them may be aware of each other.

The Free Press also carried out an overnight visit to Bodidris, and during the middle of the night the unexplained patter of footsteps were heard.

Although nothing was seen with the naked eye, an orb (which is supposed to be a sign of paranormal activity) is clearly seen in the picture.

The night was also filled with the flickering of lights, quick flashes of white lights and the turning off of mobile phones.

Woodlands Hall, Ruthin is another hotel where there have been many accounts of paranormal activity.

On a recent investigation of the building a connection was made with a lady in the tower, a gentleman in hiding, and the spirit of children.

The hall is full of beautiful carvings which the owners brought in from ship merchants, and these activities are said to be linked to the ghostly occurrences in the hall.

The Free Press will be attending a paranormal investigation at the hall this Saturday.

Spirits seances and spine-chilling spookiness were served in equal measure last Halloween when TV's Most Haunted visited the former North Wales Hospital in Denbigh.

The show was aired live from the grounds of the hospital for seven nights.
Yvette Fielding, presenter and ghost seeker on the show, told The Free Press that witches put a hex on the land where the asylum was built before being executed on that very site.

And that ever since the hospital was completed on the cursed ground in 1848, strange goings on have been recorded.

Many haunted expeditions and overnight vigil's have taken place at Ruthin Gaol.

It is thought the last person executed was Charles Meehan, a Jesuit priest, who was hung, drawn and quartered in 1679.

On February 17 1903 William Hughes, 42, was hanged at Ruthin Gaol for the murder of his wife at Rhosrobin, near Wrexham and his body buried in the grounds.

Haunted Experience investigators, who undertook ghosthunting nights at the goal described it as "phenomenal", with "a fair few incidents that we are at a loss to explain".

Ghosts have been investigated in Bodfari at the old coaching inn site the Dinorben Arms which is dated back to 1640.

The pub has an ancient well inside and is thought to be standing on the site of a Roman villa and in the seventh century a Christian hermit called Deifar is said to have settled by the ancient well.

It has been reported that a woman in black is often seen, as well as a man and a child, while people have often reported feeling that they are being watched and being followed by someone, while voices and strange sounds are said to have been heard.

Director of paranormal research for Spirit Quest UK Howard Hughes said: "It is an amazing place... very haunted."

PWLL Gwyn in Afonwen dates back from the 1500s and stands on the site of an ancient pilgrims hotel.

Spirit Quest UK who carried out investigations at Pwll Gwyn said it was an amazing place.

There is a ghost of a medieval monk who has frequently been seen sitting at the dining room table of the Pwll Gwyn and has been mistaken for a living person.

A dark shadowy figure has also been seen and upstairs is haunted by a spirit that has been known to put a hand in peoples pockets and the kitchen is also a hive for voices.

Over the past 800 years stories of ghostly apparitions and supernatural voices have echoed through the crumbling ruins of Valle Crucis Abbey.

From mysterious traces of light floating in the darkness to spirits of the legendary Owain Glyndwr, the Llangollen landmark has experienced its fair share of paranormal activity.

One writer recounted an extraordinary vision that she claimed to have witnessed at Valle Crucis in the 1930s.

She wrote: "Walking one night on the road opposite Valle Crucis Abbey with my aunt, we stopped to peer through the darkness and suddenly I was amazed to see in front of the abbey the ground light up in a large circle of the most golden dazzling light, apparently emanating from the ground.

"In the middle of the circle, there was some kind of golden object several feet high and walking about quite a number of human figures, garbed in wonderful golden costumes with golden helmets on their heads.

Nestled in the Horseshoe pass, The Britannia Inn, Llangollen is believed to have been built in the 13th century by the monks from Valle Crucis Abbey.

Guests have reported been awoken in the night to find monks around their beds and seeing them walking through the car park and the bar area which used to be a bakery.

Spirit Quest UK said this was the most spiritually active location they have ever visited and would go as far as to say probably one of the most spiritually active buildings in the country.

"The amount of activity witnessed in just three hours was unprecedented," said Mr Hughes.

"Llangollen is the best area for paranormal activity, whenever we go there we get a lot happening.

"We don't know why. I think it may be because there is a lot of history."
