An Englewood East man who allegedly used a Bowie knife to rob a gas station did not fill up while he was there. He was arrested after his getaway car ran out of gas.

David Eric Hampton, 23, of the 9000 block of Fruitland Avenue, was charged Sunday with robbery with a weapon, and loitering/prowling, the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office said.

He is being held at the county jail without bail.

About 3:30 a.m. Sunday, a man pulled a 12-inch knife on the clerk of the BP Station, 8675 Placida Road, Cape Haze, the Sheriff's Office said. The man demanded money and fled, but a customer called 911 and followed the suspect's white Mercury Cougar before it sped out of sight.

Deputies eventually found clothing believed to be the suspect's, and a newspaper carrier told them that a man in a white car had run out of gas at Arlington Drive and Amberjack Place. Officers checked the license tag, which was identified as Hampton's. About 9 a.m., Hampton was arrested behind a home on Amberjack Place, the report said.
