"We have about 50% of the world's wealth but only 6.3% of its population. This disparity is particularly great as between ourselves and the peoples of Asia. In this situation, we cannot fail to be the object of envy and resentment. Our real task in the coming period is to devise a pattern of relationships which will permit us to maintain this position of disparity without positive detriment to our national security. To do so, we will have to dispense with all sentimentality and day-dreaming; and our attention will have to be concentrated everywhere on our immediate national objectives. We need not deceive ourselves that we can afford today the luxury of altruism and world-benefaction."
~ US State Department, 1948

Itys, The Black Headed Meteor, is a mega-asteroid in Earth orbit. It has been in a three body orbit for a quarter centrury or more. The orbit passes through the Earth's atmosphere and Itys has now travelled tens of thousands of miles (a very small fraction of its orbital distances) through the Earths atmosphere losing energy as it does so. The orbit is approaching the final two-body stage with its period now seeming to be less than one year. It was observed travelling in its South to North orbit around the Eastern Australian coast last June and is therefore likely to make two close Earth passes this year, one within the next few weeks to months.
How do I recognise Itys:
The appearance depends upon a number of factors, mainly its height in the atmosphere and the time of day. The head is usually dark (or black) with orange/red flames to the edges or swirling about the head. It often sports a white tail, not usually connected directly to the head there being a significant gap filled with dark particulate matter. When seen at night the light, a blood red/orange, flickers as it lights up the ground. It will only be visible for a few seconds.
How big is Itys?
Itys in my best estimations is between two and four miles in diameter.
How fast does Itys travel? Currently about 10.5 miles per second.
Is Itys dangerous? Yes. Itys will become an Extinction Level Event within the next few years.
Can anything be done? No.
