I'd never thought of this before.
My particular favorite is Beauty and the Beast. I was captivated by Jean Cocteau's 1946 film version of the story. The true psychopath (the one who changed the prince into a beast) is never really seen. Instead, you see how the various "ordinary" people in the story deal with the cruel legacy of the evil spell.
It is a fitting homily for our current condition, in which we waste most of our time blaming each other for a tragedy that lies beyond the boundaries of our awareness.
Either, but it makes sense. Our ancestors truly could SEE, and they left clues, and hints everywhere to their descendants in this case us; in order that those who get it, can put the picture together again, and also SEE. My, Oh my, the show just keeps getting more interesting by the day.
If the psychopaths are in power, then the last thing our ancestors would do is to confront them, opting instead to use the Fairy Tales and similar means.
Later on, when education arrived, the people oppressed by the tryants would prefer rebellion (revolution). This can backfire, as it did in France (the bloody Cardinal) and in the Soviet Union, where a monster took control.
But, today, there is both networked education and propaganda, so the game is changed.
.....you people never knew this ???......and being euro-centric psychopaths y'a selves...never thought to see it as a universal and ancient theme going into the babayaga and vaselina stories of russia or the Oily Man of Asia 9 that being more a premonition of western Lust for asian oil)........but seriously y'a this never even crossed y'a minds......damn ......wonder what y'all would think of a Gilles de Rais............
Clarissa Pinkola Estes covers a lot of Fairy tales in her book 'Women who run with Wolves' and how over time the stories have become sanitised by the controlling influences of the time; whether that was the Church, wars or the ruling body. In her book the orginal structure or bones of the story are put back into place so that their full meaning is apparent and the tales have a real resonance. Rather than the sugary versions that are churned out by Disney and the watered down versions that we now see in books.
What is interesting about this is the new show on ABC called "Once Upon A Time"...about this very subject.
