Syria has bluntly alleged that the US manipulates its veto power at the UN Security Council (UNSC) chiefly to protect the Israeli regime, prompting the American UN envoy to lead a walkout from the chamber.

The incident took place Tuesday, following the opposition of UNSC permanent members Russia and China to the US-led anti-Syria draft resolution, which triggered the openly-displayed US outrage.

Officially, the anti-Damascus resolution was drafted by US and Israeli allies, France, Britain and Germany, threatening sanctions against Syria over an alleged crackdown on protesters within the country.

The nine affirmative votes for the anti-Syria move were cast by the US, Britain, France, Germany, Portugal, Bosnia, Gabon, Nigeria and Colombia. While permanent UNSC members China and Russia opposed the motion, effectively vetoing it, South Africa, Brazil, Lebanon and India abstained from voting.

Following the vote, Syrian Ambassador to the UN Bashar Ja'afari accused the Western countries that perpetrated the UNSC effort of turning a blind eye on Israeli crimes in the occupied Palestinian territories.

"A certain state has used its veto power 50 times to protect Israel and still threatens to use it again. This could amount to be an accomplice in genocide. This conduct is equal to turning a blind eye to and supporting the Israeli massacre in the occupied Arab territories and it used the developments in Syria to divert the international public opinions away from the legitimate Palestinian demands," he said.

Elsewhere, the Syrian envoy insisted that the US-led Western governments were inciting armed violence in his country.

Ja'afari also blasted the use of aggressive rhetoric by Western envoys in the UN chamber.

Meanwhile, the rigorous US-led attempt against Syria at the UNSC has been widely described as an unprecedented political move since no such action has ever been adopted by the world body against mostly Western-backed regimes that continue to employ much more brutal crackdowns on anti-state protesters. Bahrain, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Morocco have been mentioned as some current examples.

The American UN Envoy Susan Rice announced that Washington was outraged at the failure of the council to condemn what she described as a violent crackdown on protests in Syria.

"The United States is outraged that this council has utterly failed to address an urgent moral challenge and a growing threat to regional peace and security," she said.

Rice defiantly called on UNSC members that supported the anti-Syria effort to impose tough unilateral sanctions against Damascus.

Many regional observers, however, view the US-engineered push against Syria at the UNSC as an obvious pro-Israeli move, chiefly aiming to destabilize a country that is partially occupied by Israeli forces and also serves as home to tens of thousands of Palestinian refugees. Syria is also regarded as the only base in the area for a number of Palestinian resistance movements.

Meanwhile, Damascus insists that the unrest in Syria has been largely orchestrated by elements that are well-paid and armed by foreign powers and some neighboring states, including Turkey, as well as the Israeli regime.

Syria state TV has also broadcast reports and images of seizure of arms caches and confessions by alleged terrorists that elaborated on how they obtained weapons from foreign sources.
