This has to be bunk. These statisticians could not have 'controlled' for all of the variables that influence a person's occupation and career. It is so simplistic it's laughable. What about the parents' economic class and occupations, the local areas in which people are raised, the quality of schools, the availability and affordability of education, to name a few? What about people who don't have so much a career arc as a string of various blue collar and white collar jobs doing a wide variety of things? What about people who work as cops and go to night school then become lawyers, or emergency paramedics who work and study hard and get into medical school? What about laid-off engineers who do construction, or self-taught remodelers who become small housing developers, or scientists who start up small companies and end up becoming entrepreneurs?
All high school and college introductory courses in statistics should have a big banner over the white boards up front that says, in bold black letters, "Correlation Does Not Imply Causation!" Teachers and professors should emphasize that if you see a correlation with two variables that seems odd, you probably don't know everything.
