I was born in raised in a small town about 25 miles east of Cincinnati, and this has happened for as long as I can remember (30 years). Always after a big rain, worms would come out of the earth, and start crawling along wet sidewalks and driveways. Once the rain stopped, and the hard surfaces dried, the worms shriveled up and died. I always thought it was kind of gross, but this certainly is not new.
However, the scale on which this recently occurred may be new, but the event itself is pretty standard for the area.
