The FBI is investigating what might be a bullet hole, discovered in the side of a US Airways Group Inc (LCC.N) plane this week, the airline said on Wednesday.
The small hole in the Boeing (BA.N) 737-400 was found by a pilot on Monday at the Charlotte/Douglas International Airport in North Carolina.
"The pilot was doing his standard, pre-flight walk-around and noticed a small hole in the rear, left fuselage," said US Airways spokeswoman Michelle Mohr.
An FBI spokeswoman in Charlotte was not immediately available to comment on the investigation.
The aircraft had arrived in Charlotte from Philadelphia carrying 84 passengers and was scheduled to fly to Hartford, Connecticut, when the hole was found.
The plane, designed to carry 144 passengers and five crew members, was taken out of service on Monday and was scheduled to be back in service on Wednesday, Mohr said.

Since the 9/11 attacks, no book has provided a satisfactory answer as to WHY the attacks occurred and who was ultimately responsible for carrying them out - until now.
With the recent no fly zone that has been forced upon Libyan airspace, it's as if the universe is responding in kind and warning that a no-fly zone may be forced upon the US by the activity of thse micrometeoroids which are suspended in the upper atmosphere. With all the recent fireball activity in the skies, there is likley a large amount of these micrometeoroid particles floating in the atmospheric layers above our heads, and as Dr Gabriela pointed out in her recent article in the Dot Connector magazine, they can stay suspended in the upper atmoshpere for a long time - up to four years in the case of the Tunguska cometary explosion - before they reach lower altitudes. I would not be suprised if we begin to see more of these mysterious holes and peppering of airplane's with possible mircometeoroid material, spreading to other Northern Hemisphere and western nations, and then throughout the globe as we move forward and the incidence of fireballs and cometary intrusions leaving more of these micrometoeroids grows apace.
