Narvik, Harstad, Andøy, Lofoten and Vesterålen is dark between 8 am and 10 Thursday because of strain on the network, said Statnett.
Power is now back in Northern Norway, but new areas may be switched off later in the day.
Statnett says on its website that the power situation in northern Norway is very vulnerable for a break from the power line to begin again Kvandal Nordland Wednesday morning.
Statoil's gas power plant at Melkøya now supplies 30 MW, approximately. 15 percent of its total capacity to the regular grid to ensure power supply in Finnmark, but there was not enough.

"This is completely unacceptable, "said the mayor of Narvik Helge Eriksen (H) to Aftenposten.no.
At 08.20 was the stream still present in the center of Harstad, although the city should have been blacked out at 08.00. The mayor was in the process of collecting municipal staff to take action.
"We should get more information, and of course we should have had longer notice of such extensive power cuts," said Eriksson.

Two children's schools in Harstad are without power, but neither the schools or the mayor sees any purpose in sending the children home.

Right now, Harstad center is not affected by power cuts, while areas around the city are without power.

The mayor hopes that the error on the grid will soon be repaired. He believes it is a paradox that large parts of Nordland and Troms can be blacked out because a power line breaks. This vulnerability is with a theme he's going to take up with the energy authorities at the earliest opportunity.

Statnett notified some time before 10 o'clock on Thursday that the power was back in all the affected areas.
Disconnection between the hours of 08:00 and 09:00 affected energy suppliers Hålogaland Power, Energy Narvik, Andøy Trollfjord Energy and Power.
While some customers have had power back, warning that the power suppliers Statnett Lofoten Kraft, Vesterålskraft and Troms Kraft will probably be switched off Thursday at 11:00.
"This is to reduce the load on the network to avoid more extensive errors," writes Statnett on their websites.
It is unclear how many subscribers are without power later today.
