In coming days, the “beast from the East” could bring chaos similar to the pre-Christmas whiteout
Winter is set to roar back to Britain with a vengeance this week as a Russian weather front threatens another big freeze.

And there will be no let-up until well into March, say weather experts.

In coming days, the "beast from the East" could bring snow chaos similar to the pre-Christmas whiteout.

Scotland and the North will be worst hit, with up to two inches of snow and temperatures as low as -10C. The South will not escape the icy blasts, with temperatures sinking to -5C.

Jonathan Powell, of Positive Weather Solutions, said: "Nowhere is safe, although the North is really in the line of fire.

"A harsh slice of winter is on the way which will parallel early Christmas. Freezing temperatures will kick in from Monday, putting spring on ice. These conditions are going to hang around until the second week in March."

Netweather's Ian Michaelwaite said a front was heading to the UK from Russia and Scandinavia, bringing "strong winds, snow, and some very cold weather".

Councils say they have enough grit to cope, and a Transport Department spokesman said: "Salt deliveries have continued to arrive in the last month and we are in a much better position than at this time last year."

During December's big freeze, ice on runways caused planes to be grounded.

A BAA spokesman yesterday said: "We've a revised snow plan at Heathrow that includes additional resources, and we'll be closely monitoring weather forecasts."
