...I'm a bit suspicious of this explanation as well. You'd think that if this is related to busy airports - the phenomenon would be more frequent.
Sure, the precondition is rare but once it does happen over a busy airport, then lots of "holes" should be made in one go, right? In the above example, why only three punch holes? The weather pattern would last for a while - did only three airplanes take off from that "busy" airport?
Smells like Chinese Lanterns to me.
Unless, something fell from above onto the ground. That would be more interesting...
The three hole punch clouds are entirely a natural phenomenon - just rare; & tripley rare for triples.
This happens every time rain (or more likely snow, in this case) starts, but we usually we cannot see it. When the cloud is a thin layer such as this, but thickening, sooner or later it becomes unstable at one (or more) point/s, due to the local mass of the cloud. This then begins to fall as rain or snow. As it falls the centre will accelerate, causing the pinching effect visible. Blue or clear sky above highlights the effect when the cloud is thin.
Also it cannot be planes, as they would leave a greatly elongated hole - not mostly round as these are.
Sooner or later we will have a video to show it as it is happening.
but it was over city of Zagreb, Croatia three or so weeks ago. There was two similar formations and yes I would say it was close to airport or related to air traffic in specific area, but what is strange is the fact that in 38 years of my life living here I NEVER SAW this phenomenon so far!
