A man in his 30s was shot to death by a police officer in the town of Arad after apparently threatening his ex-wife with a knife during their son's birthday party. The woman sustained light wounds in the incident.

A Magen David Adom ambulance team pronounced the man dead at the scene.

Police received a report around 9:30 pm Friday about a man threatening to murder his ex-wife. Officers dispatched to the scene found the man putting a knife to the woman's neck and threatening to kill her. The man warned that "those will be her last breaths."

Police ordered the man to put down the knife several times, yet he ignored them and started hurting the woman, who sustained arm injuries.

Once police felt the woman was facing immediate danger, one of the officers at the scene shot the man in the head. An ambulance and more police arrived to the site of the incident a short time later.

An initial investigation revealed that the man arrived at the apartment during his son's birthday party, proceeded to pull out a knife, and forced all family members out of the apartment, except for the woman. The frightened relatives promptly called police.
