Middle East Madness

U.S. military says an unmanned drone has crashed in southern Iraq.

The military says the Air Force MQ-1 Predator unmanned drone crashed after being launched from an air base near Balad, 80 kilometers (50 miles) north of Baghdad, at about 4 a.m. Friday.

The military says mechanical failure is suspected in the crash. The U.S. military has several unmanned MQ-1 Predators doing surveillance over Iraq.

They have become mainstays of the U.S. war effort, offering round-the-clock airborne "eyes" watching over road convoys, tracking nighttime insurgent movements via infrared sensors, and occasionally unleashing one of their two Hellfire missiles on a target.
