The Living Planet

A fairly strong earthquake jolted Chiba Prefecture on Thursday morning, the Meteorological Agency said.

There was no report of casualties or damage to property, police said. No tsunami warning was issued following the quake.

The temblor that struck at 7:34 a.m. registered 4 on the 7-point Japanese intensity scale in Ichihara, and 3 in wide areas of Chiba Prefecture including Narita as well as part of Ibaraki Prefecture.

The focus of the earthquake, which is estimated at 4.5 on the open-ended Richter scale, was located about 40 kilometers below the seabed east of Chiba Prefecture, according to the agency.
