Toledo firefighters are investigating reports of a mysterious odor in parts of Toledo. The egg smell has brought in reports from the downtown Toledo area and as far west as Dorr Street at Richards. The source of the odor is not known as of 11:10 a.m. Columbia Gas says the odor is not natural gas and believes the odor is coming from a refinery in the area.

At this point, there have been no reports of any danger to the public associated with the odor.

Update:

There are new details on that mysterious smell that blew through Toledo yesterday. The BP refinery says it has looked into it and due to an investigation they are to blame. Environmental officials believe it was a release of hydrogen sulfide that caused the stink, but they haven't pin-pointed the exact source. BP says crews are inspecting storage tanks, process units and piping.

BP Husky Toledo Refinery has sent this press release about their investigation:

"The BP Husky Toledo Refinery has completed its investigation of reports of an unusual odor in the greater Toledo area on April 3 and determined that the refinery was not the source of the odor.

Following a thorough inspection of the refinery yesterday and monitoring overnight, no source of the odor was found at the refinery. The refinery was operating normally at the time of the odor reports and continues to operate normally today.

"We take community concerns about our operations seriously and believe in responding quickly and with an abundance of caution," said refinery manager Ron Unnerstall. "Crews from the refinery inspected storage tanks, process units and piping throughout the refinery and inspected data and monitoring devices from yesterday's operations. We found nothing that could be the source of the odor complaints."

BP will continue to offer its cooperation to Ohio EPA and the Toledo Division of Environmental Services in their investigation."
