Officials in Beverly Hills will vote on a smoking ban tonight for outdoor diners.
The proposal prohibits smoking at restaurant patios and poolside bars and eateries at hotels.
It would be similar to outdoor smoking bans adopted in Burbank, Calabasas and Santa Monica.
Opponents say the proposed ban could prompt smokers to eat at restaurants in nearby Los Angeles or West Hollywood, where smoking is allowed outdoors.
They say that would cost Beverly Hills sales tax revenue.
The proposal calls for city staff to evaluate the effects of the measure.
If the ban causes too many problems, the City Council can repeal the ordinance before May 31st, next year.
