Several people in Swords took to social media this morning after reportedly hearing a loud bang - with one person saying "the whole house shook".

Local resident Lesley McKeever posted a question on her Facebook status shortly after 10am asking if anyone else had heard the loud bang - or felt the "huge shake".

She said: "Anyone else in Swords just feel a huge shake and hear a loud bang about ten minutes ago???

"The whole house shook...have checked everywhere inside and out nothing seems out of the ordinary???"

Others reported hearing the noise, which some suggested may have come from the nearby quarry at Feltrim.

However, Lesley responded by saying she'd been living there 10 years and had never heard a blast from there before.

The source of the enormous, earth-shaking noise remains a mystery.

Gardai at Swords said they had no reports of any explosion or loud bang in the area either this morning or at any time since.

Dublin Live also tried to call the Feltrim quarry, which is run by Roadstone, but the group's operations closed for Christmas on Friday the 21st and won't reopen until January 3.

Lesley told Dublin Live she and her neighbours were puzzled by the noise.

She said: "I was sitting having tea in the living room at around 10am when there was an enormous bang - the house shook.

"I won't lie - my first thought was that it was an earthquake.

"My dog shot upright, she looked like she was going to bolt, but we just sat there staring at each other. Shocked.

"I thought that maybe the sound had come from the apartment upstairs, thinking her young child may have climbed on something and brought it down, but she came down to me thinking it was us.

"We checked outside and inside and nothing had fallen etc. We were baffled. Soon after there was helicopters about.

"I had thought of the quarry but I have lived here for 10 years and never heard or felt anything like this. Had asked my Swords friends if they felt it etc., one in Holywell said she did. So at least we knew it wasn't just our house. Very strange indeed.

"I have a friend who lives on the other side of Swords and she heard it as well. There were helicopters going overhead shortly afterwards - we assumed they might have something to do with it, but maybe not."

Another Swords local, Jules, who lives in Holywell in Swords, told Dublin Live she felt a "rumble", adding that the noise was scary.

She said: "This morning whilst pottering around my home, I heard a loud noise and felt the house shake and felt a rumble.

"I thought it strange but I put it down to the quarry at Feltrim but did think it was a bit scary.

"I looked out of windows of front and back - I couldn't hear or see anything - but saw helicopter too then and after that every couple of hours I've heard loud noises with like rumbles afterwards.

"It's nothing to do with the planes either soundwise. Since finding out the quarry is closed I've no idea what it is - I did think at first it was a bit much for the quarry and the siren usually goes first - whereas this time I never heard a siren."

The source of the ground-shuddering noise remains a mystery...for now.
