Massive sinkhole opens up on highway and swallows 5 cars in Algeria

A large sinkhole has opened up on a highway near Ben Aknoun, a commune of Algiers Province and a suburb of the city of Algiers in northern Algeria, on November 18, 2016. Five cars fell into the hole, injuring a total of 11 people.

According to the Nassim Bernaoui, Algerian Emergency Preparedness communications manager, the hole opened on the highway towards Ben Aknoun, near the city of Sahraoui.

Six people were injured and hospitalized according to initial assessment.

The hole is currently 4 meters (13 feet) long, 6 meters (19.7 feet) wide and 4 meters deep.

According to the dispatcher photos, the hole is still expanding, Meteo Algerie reports.

The event follows days of intense rains.

According to the final assessment made by civil protection on Saturday, November 19, 11 people were injured.

I just recently saw a television show about whether you would survive if a sinkhole opened up right underneath your car. Not surprisingly, the best route to safety and saving your life is to get the hell out of there as soon as possible unless you're injured, then you make as much noise as possible so someone can get you before you get sucked down into oblivion...
