The specimen was found on Cerralvo Island near the coast of Baja California Sur
The body of the creature was said to be "in such a bad state of decomposition, experts could not determine what it was," according to local Mexican media outlet BCS Noticias.
However, its haunting appearance has baffled people around the world, who claim the specimen could even be a 'humanoid fish' or some form of alien creature.
The as-yet unidentifiable specimen was found on the rocks of Cerralvo Island near the Mexican coast of Baja California Sur.
The fisherman who filmed the footage of the creature can be heard saying: "This animal is the devil or a mermaid, who knows which one.
"It has a tail, hair, a mouth like a human but two horns. This is a rare animal."
In the background of the video, one of his colleagues insists the animal was a half-human-half-fish creature - not unlike a mermaid.
Local museum staff claimed the carcass was a beaked whale
Around 14,000 people have watched reports of the creature's discovery on Facebook and YouTube in recent days.
Locals to the area told BCS Noticias that, judging by the horns, the creature could be a feral goat introduced to the area years ago.
Viewers on Facebook claimed the creature could be a sea iguana or a dolphin while others pushed forward theories of an alien "who could not handle the heat and atmosphere".
Staff at the local Whale and Marine Sciences Museum near the site said the creature was most likely a beaked whale - however, these are not usually found in the Gulf of California.
Official environmental authorities have yet to comment on the creature as the social media frenzy continues.
