These are NOT what folks in the US consider 'swordfish', which are large, very fast, billfish which are believed to use their sword-like bills to slash and take schooling fish. They are so named for their swordlike bill.
I take it these swordfish are so named because of their BODIES' similarity to swords.
I agree with jim24's 'overfishing BS'. I also find it hard to see how the broken necks of fish could be related to anything other than some mechanical event, and certainly not to 'overfishing,' BS indeed!
However, true swordfish ARE being wiped out by overfishing and although they're great, let 'em go and don't order them at restaurants.

That's a puzzler for sure.
I suppose if they were seizing hard enough (maybe due to toxic outgassing, chemical pollution, infectious process, or perhaps even electrical discharging) then they might snap their necks from that.
