Earthquake
A strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.4 has struck the Indian Ocean far south of Australia, seismologists say.

The earthquake was centered about 1,032 kilometers (641 miles) southwest of Hobart on Tasmania island, or about 1,471 kilometers (914 miles) southwest of Melbourne. It struck about 8 kilometers deep, making it a shallow earthquake, according to Geoscience Australia.

The earthquake, which was measured at 6.3 by the U.S. Geological Survey, is not expected to have been felt on land anywhere. Geoscience Australia said the Joint Australian Tsunami Warning Centre had been notified, but no tsunami warnings are expected to be issued.
