Italy floods: Foot of rain in 4 hours - 1 dead and 2 missing in Piacenza

Heavy rain swept across many parts of northern Italy yesterday, Monday 14 September, causing flooding and landslides. A regional meteorological agency says that some areas of Emilia-Romagna saw over 300 mm of rain fall in just 4 hours.

One man has died after his car was swept away by floods in Ponte dell'Olio in Piacenza province, Emilia-Romagna, according to Italian news agency ANSA. Two other men, also in Piacenza province, are still missing. The worst affected villages and towns in the province include Farini, Pontedellolio, Ferriere, Bettola, Ottone and Corte Brugnatella.

Flooding was also reported in parts of Veneto region, where a motorway was blocked by landslides, and also in the port city of Genoa and other areas of the Liguria region.

Rainfall - 330 mm in four hours

Below are the rainfall totals during a 24 hour period between 13 and 14 September, according to WMO:

Genova / Sestri - 79.0 mm

Piacenza - 58 mm

Paganella - 58 mm

The official website for the Emilia-Romagna region says that rainfall levels have been significantly higher in localized areas.

"According to data provided by Arpa Emilia-Romagna, from the early hours of today (14 September), the western provinces of Emilia-Romagna registered record values of rain of 330 mm in four hours".
